Spot on!Let's not confuse piling up stats in today's Madden-version, fantasy football, offense-first NFL as a comparison to QBs or any other position of yesteryear. Today, there are more than a dozen wide receivers and tight ends who easily eclipse the number of yards and receptions than Drew Pearson's best season. Roger Staubach averaged 173 yards passing per regular season game during his career - Aikman averaged 200 yards. Roger threw a total of 153 TDs in his 11 year career which averages out to about 14 TDs per season. By today's standards, Roger and likely Troy wouldn't start for most teams - they would be considered "bus drivers." However, Roger, Troy, and Drew all are all in the Hall of Fame, Ring of Honor, and SB champions.
Comparing player stats from different eras is ridiculous. Player stats should on be compared to peers if their own era. A player ranking 1st in a stat in his era is equal to a player ranking 1st in a different era. The actual stats may be significantly different, but the accomplishment is the same. All stats should be normalized to account for differences between eras.
