Staubach is the greatest Cowboys QB of all time and it's not really a contest IMO.
He's the one who was 1st Team All-Decade and he's the one who made the NFL 100 All-Time Team. He retired with the highest all-time career passer rating while also averaging 5.5 yards per rushing attempt, in an era where spearing and knecapping were basically just how you said "hello."
He played most of his career in the NFL's dead ball era
and still retired with a higher passer rating than Aikman. Airman is rightfully in the Hall of Fame too, don't get me wrong, but that's just bananas. He efficiency for his era was just absurd.
Here's a fun comparison: think of how often Tom Brady just chucked it deep to Randy Moss in 2007 to set all those records. Staubach's AVERAGE yards per completion over his ENTIRE CAREER (13.5) was longer than Brady's was in 2007 (12.1). Staubach's average completion in 1971 went for almost 15 yards a pop while he was ALSO the most efficient and least interception-prone QB in the league, by MILES.
You compare him to what other QBs were doing when he played and it's just insane.
Isn’t this just the Gil Brandt thread again?
Pretty much but it's the off-season and we're bored.
