It's not 1995, and hasn't been for a long time. Playing for the Dallas Cowboys is no longer a privilege.

The Cowboys are still the team that gets the most coverage from the media. The quarterback gets endorsements for being a quarterback for the Cowboys. The Cowboys have the largest fan base in the NFL. So it is a privilege. It makes a difference playing for the Cowboys. What team with their lack of success in the last 25 years gets the coverage they do or has their fan base?

It's not how much, it's when. Yeah he got offers in the 30s... after the Cowboys let like 2 waves of NFL QB contract inflation happen.

The problem for teams is that the share of money QBs can demand only moves one way, up.

IF IF IF you want the guy long term, you don't dawdle for 6-12 months like the Cowboys seemingly did because there's always going to be a sucker that gives the next Jimmy Garroppolo a trillion dollars for 3 games or something and the number keeps moving up.

Conversely, if you don't want to pay the guy, that's fine too - at this point it might be the ONLY move, and I LIKE Dak... but then you move them off your books PROMPTLY and draft a guy who is cost controlled several years.

Basically the Cowboys never really get ahead of problems, everything is an impulse decision made later than it should be.

So— swallow the pill— sign him. The alternative is too costly IMO. Not only do you lose a starting franchise QB that you have to replace... but you lose team leadership and identity. On top of that— you lose respect and credibility from the players in the locker room who all love and want to play for Dak.

Best most savvy move the Jones’ can make?

Go big and give him a huge deal and sing his praises and have a love in and sing kumbayah. Build in a provision in the contract that lets you get out from under it in 3 years if he implodes and can’t get you to a championship. Then you can shed all bad contracts on the books and start a rebuild in earnest if you need to

This gives you a 3 year window to compete, honors and values Dak, satisfies the team and shows you are committed to doing what it takes to win.

Fail to do this is a lack of leadership and it would not surprise me in the least if Stephen and JJ fumble the hell out of this situation (again )

If you have a stellar offensive line and a running game yes it takes a lot of pressure off the rookie QB. After that it comes down to basic arm talent and the ability to learn the offense and read the defense. That was the situation Dak Prescott got added to. How many QB's had that?

If the line asserts itself back to it's 2016 level and the running games gets back on track and it comes down to pure basic QB talent yea, Lawrence and Fields are far and away ahead of Dak when he came out of college. Will there be things for them to learn? Sure, but Dak at his 40+ million demand still has trouble hitting receivers in stride and is terrible about progressing through his reads.

Mahomes long-term deal averages $45 million per year. So the $40-$44 mil the Prescott camp wants doesn't surprise me, and shouldn't surprise many.

It's been awhile but Mahomes deal also left KC with a ton of flexibility didn't it? Dak can't get paid like that and limit the years on his contract. He will put us in too tight of a spot.

I think ANYONE saying respect is based on how much you are offered is on shaky ground. There is a time honored thing called negotiation you know....

Especially when talking salary cap. I know there are those that somehow think you can pay everyone as much as they want all the time but bluntly speaking hard decisions have to be made.

Now I am certainly not thinking Jethro and company are in any way top of the NFL in anything except getting attention. Not seen much to respect Stephen for certainly and Jethro's record screams for itself.

However when a player seems intent on getting every penny he can when the end result is only going to vary maybe 10% or so and that player is going to get sufficient guaranteed money to live wealthy the rest of his life and that of his family NO MATTER WHAT then I question the part about being a leader.

I exhibit Drew Brees as a player that has consistently pushed to get every cent he can each time he negotiated. and what was the end result? The Saints have only sniffed the SB really once since their win. One can not blame his greed for all of that but can anyone argue it was NOT a contributing factor?

Team Identity? What Identity? What was our record with Dak starting for us in 2019 and 202 (prior to injury) Its not like we were a powerhouse.

So if Dak wants 50 million for 3 years and all of it guaranteed you say pay him?

will take Dak out the equation since he's such a polarizing figure in Cowboy nation. You pay any young qb this type of money who 1.) Has not won anything of significance (ie Super Bowl, League MVP, Playoff games (plural), Super Bowl MVP) then you're setting the franchise back years 2.) Is playing on a team with multiple holes that will take significant cap to fix 3.) Playing with an aging offensive line with potential injuries that could end careers could lead to catastrophic results in regards to building a super bowl roster. He gets a deal like that without talent already in place and we'll look like Philly and LA minus the trips to the Super Bowl in 3 years because you'll have to sell off all the talent to compensate for that huge contract. I just don't see how you pay a player this amount of money that doesn't have the resume to warrant it. That's not a shot at any one in particular it just doesn't make good business sense to me.
