Dallas Cowboys already have a big decision to make on cornerback Kaiir Elam

They obviously are not picking up the 5th year option. He's not getting 12.5 mill guaranteed out of anyone. This is his reclamation season.

Let's stop pretending that Yardbarker provides any meaningful content.
A consideration of alternative facts was presented. That is beneficial to put in context. Even if it doesn't clear up blame substituted for Jerry. Source or topic the point?

Expanding 1st round contract considerations.

To Jerry he’s family. His Dad played here. In idiot Jerry’s mind that makes it a good idea to acquire a guy.
and you think Jerry was actually scouring the wire and came into the office and said, "Boys, lets go out and trade for this here CB, his daddy used to play here?" Give me a break

Yes, you’re right. Jerry’s track record on personnel decisions are always very well thought out. Very prudent to trade for a guy whose team is willing to unload him and fifth year option decision is 60 days away. Shrewd.

A CB and DE this season?

No one in their right mind would think he was getting that option picked up. Non story

not surprisingly, you missed the point. We have other people wanting to do these deals. Will McClay is pretty much the GM. He is the one doing this kind of HW. By the way, our FO makes pretty damn good player decisions as a whole.

You like those awesome trades the 49ers are currently doing. They got a ton for Deebo, didnt they? Then today, they went out and signed that super stud Demarcus Robinson. if only we had the niners FO.

Or how bout those Falcons, paying their backup qb almost 27 million.
Or how about.......... and on and on and on and on it goes.

You still follow a 30 year calendar, huh...relavency was provided and why. You imply rules don't matter. That might be why contracts are in fact negotiated by the Player's Association, which Eugene Upshaw was president for about 20 years. Ex A&I who made NFL Hall of Fame. He didn't just leave behind voice mail.

Maybe I'm missing something. I read the article. It gave no good reason to pick up his 5th year option. Not in this scenario. In almost every case (not all), the 5th year option is picked up for players a team intends to extend. Not to just keep the player for 1 more year.

Player achievements. You ignored the blatant element of paying the price and then a developed place with real production. I didn't miss the baseline talents and aggressively proven character. Know what Calvary is? All committed and dedicated for the fight.

The principal still at play, when changing teams one has to earn his place and both years and pay depend up more than legitimate potential. 5th and 6th round trades are often employed on departures form transitional teams that need the money and time on the field for progress. Not declassed potentials.

Good staff and opportunity will motivate for those going to make the grade further.

It was only a three game sample size last year before he got hurt, but Elam graded out as a top-50 corner last season. Not exactly elite, but a far cry from what Dallas got out of guys like Andrew Booth and Amani Oruwariye last year.

For a the cost of a 5th and 6th round swap he's at least worth a look.

Though Mukuamu was always listed as a safety by the Cowboys, the versatile defensive back made his way to the NFL as mostly a cornerback at South Carolina before being shoehorned into the safety room for depth reasons.
With the emergence of Markquese Bell and Juanyeh Thomas behind contract-extended talent, i.e., Donovan Wilson and Malik Hooker, Mukuamu has found his way onto the field as a cornerback for Dallas and been more than serviceable in doing so.

Elam will make that decision for them on the field. Can he prove he is worth that? I'm betting no. He is more of a backup not a starter.

More than likely, Elam and the Cowboys try to work out a two year deal at some point to avoid all that.
They have to make the decision during this offseason. I don't see them doing the fifth-year, so he's a one-year rental with the chance to show he deserves to be re-signed.

If Diggs has to go on PUP at the start of the season, I could see Mukuamu contending for the slot job. Unless we take a corner early, it's either that or Bland moves inside in the nickel. Elam is not a slot corner. Josh Butler might can play it, but who knows if he'll build on what he showed last year in a brief stint.

This player is a back-up at best; his stats at Buffalo don’t suggest he is a starter. Jerry probably signed him because he is Abe Elam’s kid…nepotism is close to Jerry’s heart and thus, is alive and well within the Dallas organization.
