With Mike McCarthy back for his third year and Kellen Moore back for his fourth (as OC), many believe things will stay status quo on offense for the Dallas Cowboys. But there’s reason to believe that will not be the case in 2022, and that the Cowboys offense is going to evolve into something a little different.

Keep in mind, with Amari Cooper playing in Cleveland these days, the Cowboys lost a fundamental part of their passing attack this year. The addition of Jalen Tolbert and James Washington should help, but no one believes them to completely fill the void left by Amari’s departure.

Further complicating matters is Michael Gallup’s injury situation. Gallup is fresh off an ACL injury and is not expected back in time to play in Week 1. That means two of the Dallas Cowboys top-three WRs from 2021 will be absent when the new season kicks off. That’s going to an effect on what Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore does.

I’ll be pleasantly surprised if our offense is top 15.

at some point the wheels will fall off unless our rookie lineman somehow ties it all together, ceedee lives up to his hype, Gallup comes back will and Tolbert has a good rookie year.

I’d expect Dalton to be fine, zeke to be above average, pollard will maximize his touches within reason and of course all predicated on Dak playing well.

If they are talking about 12 with our personnel, that’s something to behold

I'm guessing Ferguson is the second TE in this package.

It's good because it stretches the defense out. And you can protect better against 3-4 defenses. So I like it.

Right.

And since Gallup is out, it likely makes use of your best players.

Nope it’s Sprinkle

Don't forget. We also have UDFA Payton Hendershot, who likely would have been drafted if not for his off-the-field issues.

I hope Hendershot makes it, because that means he was better than McKeon and Sprinkle.

I doubt it. Probably Mckeon. And I’m not convinced we will see more 12 personnel

I'm not either. Not sure a second tight end is going to be our best 11th man for the offense. Of course, if we want to run the ball a lot and one of the tight ends proves to be a stout blocker, we might could go that way. I just think we'd do better spreading defenses out with 11 personnel, using Pollard as the 11th player. I mean, if the choice for the 11th player was between McKeon/Ferguson and Pollard, at this point, I'd want Pollard on the field more. We could use 12, though, when we only have either Elliott or Pollard on the field instead of both of them.

I feel we'll be a top 10 offense. We were pretty darn good on offense throughout the season even after Dak's injury. We won't be top 5 but I feel Tolbert will be a surprise and he'll surprise us early and I feel the offensive line will be more stable.

So I feel we will be more stable on offense, but put up fewer yards and points. But I think it's safe prediction we'll be top 10. To add to your post and thought, I'll be pleasantly surprised if we produce on offense against good teams outside the NFC east. The Tampa Bay week 1 matchup will give us an idea.

This, easily. And if they are able to run the ball from 12, they need to keep it from under center. Or else they're not fooling anyone.

More "12 personnel" is a direct result of Amari Cooper's departure. It's an adaptation that had to be made because the Cowboy's coaching staff didn't have enough faith in the WR squad picking up the stack after Cooper left. Lamb's inexperience and Gallup's health were huge factors in that decision.

A 12 package with 2 TEs? A run heavy offence?
No wonder Jerry made Amari exit and signed Washington.
Good luck being Numero Uno, Ceedee and Gallup. It looks as if touches will be even more rare for the WRs when we have 2 TEs and a runs first O.

I see a more spread out offense with TP getting a lot of pt with Zeke on the field. But, as was said, if they do try to get back to run heavy team, 12 personal makes a lot of sense. We probably don't have the lineman to be running another OG out there as a FB that often.

It's funny to me that the article mentions that we increased our use of 12 personnel last year, but had trouble running the ball. So I'm not exactly sure that 12 fixes our running game. The only way it would is if that second tight end is a plus blocker and plus receiver.

If he's an average to below-average blocker (and Schultz doesn't improve in that area from last year), then they will be the weak link in the chain that will allow the running game to get blown up.

If he's an average to below-average receiver, then defenses essentially won't see him as a receiving threat and will be better able to keep an extra defender in the box.

You want to put stress on the defense so that it cannot easily play to its strengths. 12 personnel is great when you have the players to do that, but it's hard to say that we have those players. Maybe we do, but I think it's more likely this year that there will be times for us to us the 12 package and a lot of times when we are better off with other groupings. Of course, it's typical for offenses to use multiple packages (such as 21 or 22 in short yardage), but what we should use most is our best personnel package, and right now, I don't see that including two tight ends.

Right, I caught that in the last post. The TEs have to do their job or else 12 personnel just brings more defenders near the box. There has to be a plus side to that formation or it's pointless. Shultz has to be out there, or else they'll sniff the run. I think 11 Personnel if Pollard can play the slot would be better.

With our schedule we're going to find out early on as to what works or not.

We did really well in 12 personnel before Jarwins injury.

Frankly, I'd say Jarwin as the second tight end when he was healthy was a toss-up with Wilson as the third receiver. No clear advantage personnelwise.

If we're going to use 12 this year, then are we relying on Sprinkle as the second TE, or McKeon, or the fourth-round rookie. That seems iffy to me, especially if it means keeping Pollard off the field.

For whatever reason it's probably our most effective formation. I don't know why, but I do expect we see it early and often this year. Maybe we went away more so because Gallup, Coop and CD were all in the line up? You make a fair point on Wilson and Jarwin.
