I half put in a phone call to Prof. Van Helsing who might be able to drive a spike through this perpetual Spencer experiment.
So many years of lackluster play, so minimal talent and so much expended.

I think it is time to move on, but that is just me and my big brain.

I think we have a bunch of DEs who are probably better suited to play Strong Side DE or at best, backup Weakside DE. I don't believe we really have anybody who can really be depended on to bring pressure like we need to from the weakside. We don't have an edge rusher on this team. We have a guys who play the position but we don't have guys who can get pressure. As I said earlier, Lawrence might turn into that guy but I don't know. I hope we figure out a way to bring in somebody who can play the position but I don't think it will be Spencer. I'd rather move on from Spencer. JMO

We don't agree on Spencer but most of this I do agree with. I think Spencer will be here unless someone gives him a bit more money. And I'll bet you he does well. There is no SDE on this team outside perhaps Mincey who can play that position better. You don't run much on Spencer and when healthy he'll give you some pressure and sacks.

I expect Mincey and Spencer to rotate with DLaw pending FA and the draft where hopefully we add someone who can turn the corner. Someone here will emerge to help out and compete. Selvie is high on that list but another(s) will show up.

That's fair.
All in all we gotta look at what that depth chart would look like though.

I think right now Spencer is the best contain, run-stop DE on the squad.
And while DLaw wasn't ready to provide consistent pressure last year he did play WDE late and I doubt that is going away.

If we sign a guy he may very well start at WDE; but DLaw is gonna get his snaps there, which is another reason I think the signing will be more middle of the road than over the top.
I could see this:
WDE: FA Signee(Jerry Hughes), DLaw
SDE: Mincey, Spencer, Gardner(inactive)

I think that's workable.
Minus Spencer that gets really thin at SDE.

Selvie is still a consideration. He doesn't have enough talent to play well hurt. We need rotation.

I have high hopes for Gardner. I think he might turn into a nice SDE. Probably won't be this season but maybe next. I guess I'd like to see him get more snaps but I do agree with you. If the price is right, the team will bring him back.

Lawrence is going to get snaps. Heck, he may turn into that disruptive player we need so badly. That could absolutely happen. I don't believe he will ever be that quick twitch edge rusher but that's not the only way you have impact on games. At worst, he will be a nice player to bring in and spell a starter or play situational snaps.

Yea, I could see Dallas sign Selvie back as well or instead of Spencer.

The real difference for me is Spencer was a higher caliber player basically every year but one.
Selvie had one great season after Ware and Hatcher tore up teams early.
If I can get either guy at 2m I am taking Spencer who may be limited/injured but has been a long-time Cowboy and was functional for most of last year with an arrow pointing up.

This time last year Selvie was on local radio quite a bit.
Money was often a topic as he had put together a very good 2013.
The general spiel seemed to be we need to pay him more.
Selvie hasn't banked 25+ M over his career and I feel he is pretty likely to go to the highest bidder.

And as we both allude to you need some proven vet for that depth chart spot at least until you are sure you have replaced it elsewhere.

For me it's 1) edge rusher 2) Spencer 3) Mincey 4) Selvie et al

He can be a solid rotational guy. I think you have to be realisitc about what you can do this offseason to improve this defensive line. I know people want to rid themselves of him but chances are for the price you probably can't find better value.
They have 4 DEs active for games. Lawrence and Mincey will be 2 of them. I'm hopeful that they get 2 in some combination of free agency and the draft.

If Spencer will sign for no guaranteed money then they could make the decision in training camp.

Hardy and 2nd or 3rd rounder for the other 2
