Dallas drafting philosophy should be shifting toward RB

If a potential all-world franchise back is available you take him in the 1st. Unfortunately, there are no identified franchise backs in this April's draft.

Murray is a solid back but you always need to keep your talent base replenished so Dallas should not hesitate to take a back in the latter rounds. Keep churning the roster.

It's a good 1st round for Olineman or DLineman, where the 18 year mediocrity marathon begins and eventually ends.

Pass. Murray averaged over 5 yards a carry. Don't have the luxury of devoting resources to a backup.

DL
DL
DL

First three rounds. Then OL and LB.

Our drafting philosophy? How bout our play calling philosophy. No sense drafting a RB when we don't use the ones we have. If you ask me, Murray look like the best RB in football the last two months of the season. Too bad he only got 13 carries a game.

If Adrian Peterson 2.0 is sitting there when you pick then absolutely.

Draft D-linemen in the 1st and 2nd. Draft a safety in the 3rd. Draft a running back in the 4th or later.

I think you're right about the need of this team to establish the running game and stick with it, balancing it with the pass. I don't have a ton of confidence that the coaches will be smart enough to do that, however. They seem to want to be a pass-happy team, despite our personnel being better suited to a ball control team. If we had stuck to the run in the Lions game, the Packers game, and maybe in the Denver game, we would have won at least 2 of those 3 games.

You don't target positions. You take the best player available.

The more I look at this, Dallas should be drafting RB in 1st or 2nd round. It has dual functionality to it. Let me explain:

1) Will real DeMarco Murray please stand up - none of us can deny that Murray starting exhibiting some leadership qualities in 2nd half of this season. He ran hard, better vision, caught ball well and was vocal presence on field. He was almost beast-like for stretches in multiple games. However, we can't just write-off all those injuries. He is high risk player who will between in a contract year 2014.

why you draft RB here:
Taking RB in this draft buys you insurance for 2014 season and beyond if Murray isn't resigned. I would like to see Dallas take RB with elite speed as they still have Joseph Randle as your change of pace back.

2) With reports surfacing that Romo back surgery actually dealt with ruptured annulus, I think it would be prudent for Dallas to become more of a rushing attack and limit some wear-n-tear on Romo back. The idea being you still have Romo there at end of season if it looks like Dallas can make playoffs.

why you draft RB here:
You buy time with Romo here and become a two-headed rushing attack and sprinkle in some Romo to Dez. It will be tempting for Garrett to continue to use Romo and talented WR core but truth is - bad backs don't get better by having 300+ lineman (with momentum) planting Romo on hard surface.
Teams take RBs early when they need immediate impact players. Good RBs can be obtained later but might take more time to develop. The Cowboys need to develop another RB before the 2015 season in case they don't re-sign Murray.

I liked the Randle pick when it was made, but so far he hasn't shown flashes of ANYTHING when given a chance to play. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get supplanted by a draft pick or an undrafted free agent next year. Give me Dunbar over him ever day and twice on Sunday (based on what we have seen so far). Dunbar is a productive runner ..... his biggest deficiency is protecting the QB which is a bit of a big deal.

Not sure about that. We run a passing offense first and running is a distant second. Wouldn't we want to help the passing game first?

Reasons to draft a RB in the first round:
  • You have somehow managed to accumulate all 32 first-round picks.
  • The RB in question possesses incriminating pictures of you.
That's all I can think of right now.

The universe applauds one of the greatest posts ever.

Defensive line, Safety and LB the whole draft would make me really happy.

Randle is career back-up at best, Dunbar we don't know too much about and Murray is FA after next season.

Ware is washed up. Hatcher is gone. Spencer is gone. Crawford is coming off an injury. Hayden is a career backup. Selvie was a street free agent. I can play that game too for the DL.

I can understand the thinking of the OP. I mentioned this before. But not a high round draft pick, not this year. First 2 rounds, DL, DL.
Then possibly OG, but wouldn't be opposed to another DL. Or LB or S.
QB if one drops, or else wait another year. Then RB if BPA, or wait to next year and if Murray leaves, then use a higher pick, if one doesn't look to emerge in 2014.
