Dallas drafting philosophy should be shifting toward RB

nuts we can get a good back in the 5th. there are a lot of decent running backs to be had in the draft late

For the life of me, I can't see any present scenario where the Cowboys should draft a RB in the 1st or 2nd round.

No way we should draft one that high, the Felix debacle should be the last time we ever do that.

The more I look at this, Dallas should be drafting RB in 1st or 2nd round. It has dual functionality to it. Let me explain:

1) Will real DeMarco Murray please stand up - none of us can deny that Murray starting exhibiting some leadership qualities in 2nd half of this season. He ran hard, better vision, caught ball well and was vocal presence on field. He was almost beast-like for stretches in multiple games. However, we can't just write-off all those injuries. He is high risk player who will be in a contract year 2014.

why you draft RB here:
Taking RB in this draft buys you insurance for 2014 season and beyond if Murray isn't resigned. I would like to see Dallas take RB with elite speed as they still have Joseph Randle as your change of pace back.

2) With reports surfacing that Romo back surgery actually dealt with ruptured annulus, I think it would be prudent for Dallas to become more of a rushing attack and limit some wear-n-tear on Romo back. The idea being you still have Romo there at end of season if it looks like Dallas can make playoffs.

why you draft RB here:
You buy time with Romo here and become a two-headed rushing attack and sprinkle in some Romo to Dez. It will be tempting for Garrett to continue to use Romo and talented WR core but truth is - bad backs don't get better by having 300+ lineman (with momentum) planting Romo on hard surface.

Who is playing D-line me and you??

Give me the Bishop in the second round and I will be about as Cowboy happy as I have in the past 20 years

Randle is career back-up at best, Dunbar we don't know too much about and Murray is FA after next season.

Teams are finding good ones later and later. Don't get me wrong, when that "flashy" RB is there in the 2nd I will probably be yelling for player X; it's hard not to sometimes. Lines and Safety unless QB drops!

oh yea I am talking about Jamal Charles type talent here.

Felix Jones was a complimentary back who we took in the first round. That was the bigger mistake, not the position he played.

Our philosophy should be BPA with an emphasis on building from front to back.

Consistently winning the line of scrimmage can cover up for a lot of issues.

But that's the problem. How do you know? Charles was drafted in the 3rd round, not the 1st or 2nd. Look at 1st-round RBs in recent drafts:

2012: Trent Richardson, Doug Martin, David Wilson.
2011: Mark Ingram
2010: C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mathews, Jahvid Best

That's a pretty lousy list, to my mind, in terms of on-field production to date. The one guy who's an uncontested #1 back is Martin and he was having a terrible season before he got hurt this year.

Exactly. We need to focus on winning the battles in the trenches

It is January 3rd and I will lock in my vote on this being the worst idea of 2014. Yeah lets have 2 stud RBs watching us pass 60 times. While out D gets manhandled.

No pass rush equals no pass defense.

No blocking, both for protection and to open running lanes equals no offense.

Skill positions are very important. But if you have not built the foundation for them to prosper, then wasting picks on top flight, high dollar help doesn't accomplish much.

To put this another way.

Is the problem with the offense Romo, or a combination of problems wherein Romo cannot count on a consistent running game and protection, followed closely by poor game management in the play calling area.

Now extrapolate that answer to the defense. Does it matter that you have a 50 million dollar corner back if your defensive line can never put enough pressure on the quarterback to make him rush throws, take sacks, and create turnovers?

If you don't know the answer to this, then you probably don't understand why Dallas loses to over .500 teams as much as they win against under .500 teams.

Everything about the last three years hinges on mismanagement of the building blocks of a team that make them great.

I'd toss cookies if we went RB in the 1st round this draft. Big, chunky cookies.

Jerry or Jason, is that you?

Lol Bingo!!!

C'monnnnn Wood! You are smarter than that to suggest a running back when you can find an Alfred Morris in the 5th round.

DRAFT INSIDE OUT - we can't afford to draft pieces we have when there is so much we don't. Our talent level is far from the "getting insurance" stage.
