Dallas Morning News staff predicts what's next for Romo

In today's Sunday paper, the Dallas Morning News staff was asked what's next for Tony Romo.
Will he stay, be traded, be cut right away, retire, or be a June 1 release?

Here are the abbreviated replies (sorry in advance for the group think and non=creativity...so boring):

Then to a contender. He thinks Houston is a major contender with Denver close behind.

Rom signs with Broncos and they go to the AFC title game where they lose to the Ravens.
He then retires and goes into TV

There will be teams that want him but a trade is not viable due to his contract, etc.

He guesses Houston is at the top of Romo's shopping list with a top defense, 1000 yard back and two strong WRs. Denver is second.

Trade.
Will be traded to an AFC that thinks they're a QB away from a possible Super Bowl

Also mentioned Houston and Denver....nothing like group think.

Based on conversations with GMs and coaches around the league, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Carson Palmer's retirement is a serious possibility.

Citing sources, RapSheet reports Palmer is "tired, worn down, and trying to see how his body responds" following "the most physically trying season of his career." One prominent GM told RapSheet that Palmer "has played his last down" based on "watching Palmer this year." RapSheet's report hints that 33-year-old Larry Fitzgerald could follow Palmer out the door if Carson indeed calls it quits. Palmer certainly showed signs of breakdown at age 37, but he remains a top-20 NFL quarterback. RapSheet suggests the Cardinals would make a run at Tony Romo or free agent Mike Glennon if Palmer hung up the cleats.

Agreed about Romo's drive. Its the money that will retire him. He will retire a Cowboy. Not enough serious interest at his price. He doesn't need football and won't be a backup or play for small money.

No trades. Any club that has an interest, money wise its a killer, they will wait until he is released. He will be released.

I keep hearing the talking-heads (even the guys on DC.com) stating that he won't be traded because of his "massive contract". Don't the Cowboys eat all of the guaranteed money if he's traded/released? Isn't that why some team should be more willing to trade for his contract where they'll only be paying his base salary and can release him at anytime?

If anything, the teams should not want him to be released for two reasons:
- Tony will hit the open market and will surely want more money than what he's due in base salary for the next three years in his present contract ($14M, $15M and whatever it was in 2019). Teams that decided on keeping their draft capitol will now have to pony up a multi-year $20M+ per contract with guaranteed money in it.
- Teams will have compete against each other get him signed. Tony may be open to joining 2,3 or maybe even more teams. That becomes a bidding war.

My opinion: He gets traded in March. Something like a 2017 3rd rd. pick and a conditional 4th or 5th rd. pick in 2018.

Could the cowboys keep him and let him compete for the starting job? Competition is great... Would it be a mistake to just assume Dak is not a 1-year wonder? I like Dak, but I'd sure hate to give up Romo for nothing when Dak is only costing us 700 grand or something like that...and I would have no problem with him and Romo competing for the job. Why is competition such a bad thing with JG.

It's possible. I did hear it reported today that Elway said he wouldn't trade and "would only be interested if he were released and could be signed as a free agent". I think Jerry's loyalty makes that a possibility. Who knows though. It'll be very interesting to see how it plays out.

Houston, Denver, Arizona (if Pamer retires), Kansas City (if they move on from Smith), NY Jets, and a highly doubtful Washington (if Cousins leaves)...even Miami.

Some are more far-fetch than others and most have big hurdles.

There are others too...though even less likely.
