How many years overdue?

Better late than never.
I would say just one, assuming there was a legitimate reason the Cowboys thought he could bounce back in 2020 from a sub par 2019 season. If I recall correctly, the rumor was that there was a lingering leg issue in 2019.

It was time to move on. Injuries finally did him in and he wasn't the same punter as in the past. However, I will throw appreciation his way. In his prime he was a dang good punter and I will always remember the hit he put on that Lions player that was returning a punt. He literally lit that guy up. Not to mention the 2 fake punts against the Eagles and the Raiders.
11 years, 126 games
Punting gross average: 44.5 yards - 31st all time to date
Punting net average: 40.1 yards- 46th all time to date
483 total punts: Inside the 20 - 187 = 39% Touchbacks - 24= 5% Blocks - 4

It was obviously time, or past time, for him to go, but a few years ago he was among the best Cowboys at their positions, I think.
