Dallas should rescind the franchise tag and let Dak walk

The Cowboys claim that the Andy Dalton signing has nothing to do with Dak Prescott, but it’s clear that Dalton gives the Cowboys some leverage in negotiations with Prescott.

Any team that signs Prescott to a franchise deal would need two things: (1) not to have a franchise QB already in place; and (2) at least $25M in 2020 cap space (depending on deal structure).

At this point in the offseason, very few teams even satisfy the first condition. Here is a rundown of the QB situation across the league:

  • Bills: Josh Allen
  • Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa
  • Jets: Sam Darnold
  • Patriots: Jarrett Stidham
  • Ravens: Lamar Jackson
  • Bengals: Joe Burrow
  • Browns: Baker Mayfield
  • Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger
  • Texans: Deshaun Watson
  • Colts: Philip Rivers
  • Jaguars: Gardner Minshew
  • Titans: Ryan Tannehill
  • Broncos: Drew Lock
  • Chiefs: Pat Mahomes
  • Raiders: Derek Carr
  • Chargers: Justin Herbert
  • Giants: Daniel Jones
  • Eagles: Carson Wentz
  • Commanders: Dwayne Haskins
  • Bears: Mitch Trubisky
  • Lions: Matt Stafford
  • Packers; Aaron Rodgers/Jordan Love
  • Vikings: Kirk Cousins
  • Falcons: Matt Ryan
  • Panthers: Teddy Bridgewater
  • Saints: Drew Brees
  • Bucs: Tom Brady
  • Cardinals: Kyler Murray
  • Chargers: Jared Goff
  • 49ers: Jimmy Garoppolo
  • Seahawks: Russell Wilson
A very generous list of possible landing spots contains the Patriots, Jaguars, Raiders, and Bears. That’s it.

Moving on to the second condition narrows the list even more. Here’s the cap space for each possible suitor:
  • Patriots: $2M
  • Jaguars: $21M
  • Raiders: $12M
  • Bears: $10M
The Patriots would be hard-pressed to create the necessary space. The Jaguars could make it happen. The Raiders could get to $25M by cutting Carr, but they’d be tight against the cap. The Bears would get no cap relief by cutting Trubisky and would need to create at least $15M elsewhere, which is unlikely.

Therefore, it appears that the only competition for Prescott’s services would come from the Jaguars and the Raiders. The Jaguars could offer more money, but Las Vegas would obviously be the preferable destination. In this ongoing game of chicken, Jerry Jones has to like those odds. He should call Prescott’s bluff.
Minshew has higher upside than Dak and I don’t know that Dak fits Gruden’s mold in Vegas

Part of me wonders how this team would do with Dalton at QB and Clowney at DE... Is that wrong of me?

We know how Dalton did with Geno Atkins and AJ Green for years... 0 playoff wins.

And Clowney hasn't been good for a couple of years and has a degenerative knee condition.

Clowney isn't a team-altering star anymore (if he ever was.)

Hell, Atkins had more sacks than Clowney in 2019 in spite of being much older.

I love Dalton as a Horned Frog, but anyone who thinks he’s better than Dak is nuts.

Daks contract will get done on July 15 just like Dez did in 2015.

Daks leverage is just the same because his agent will say “you want to roll with Dalton as the starter and then draft one next year, you can say goodbye to any super bowl hopes for at least 3 years”

This teams defense isn’t good enough to have Dalton as the starter win more than 7-8 games

If a team wanted to trade a Franchise Tagged player, they would let the new team work out a new contract with the player before the trade...

Dak will go to the Patriots and win a SB.

Not at all. Dak doesn't have the best skill set to take advantage of all the receiving talent. Dak is solid, but not elite. Dallas has offered elite money and he has turned that down. Time to turn the tables on Dak and the Dalton signing is an excellent start. I also wonder if MM has watched enough tape now to let the front office know that they have already offered too much. I'd love to see a trade with the Raiders.

Dak's performance against the practice squad team Phil had on the field, in a must win game, to me should have been proof enough that he isn't worth elite money.

Ok so the rest of the team have absolutely nothing to do with the success of a team. On that premise Trent Dilfer was a better QB than Dan Marino.

Dalton would certainly break his duck in the playoffs with this team...and some

Nah that’s why he got Jerry in a bind. Dak overcomes all obstacle.

He's not an obstacle any longer. Dalton is much the same guy as Dak and isn't costing a boatload of money. Dak deserves the non-exclusive tag and
let him see if he can fleece the "quan" from some other team. We get two number 1's for a pretender.

The only pretender will be the Cowboys who haven’t done jack poo since Dak, and don’t tell me about Romo who took 8 years to win 1 playoff game.

We now have a legit coach and a legit QB. Let's just see what happens. Dak isn't worth a long term deal but, he might be worth two number 1's from some unsuspecting team out there
like the Las Vegas raiders...Maybe?

Am pretty sure Jerry and Stephen sniffed around for offers for Dak , but no team is gonna pay Dak anywheee close to 30 mil , not to mention 40 mil he is asking.

LOL
I’m just popping in to point out that OP is seriously suggesting that 28 of 32 NFL teams have a “franchise quarterback”. LOL.
