I think most fans "low" opinion as it relates to him getting a HC gig is really them not admitting they don't want to lose him as DC.
It’s not just limited to Cowboys fans though. Majority of the NFL seems to have a low opinion of him as a head coach. Personally I think there’s some logic to their arguments that his success in Atlanta was due to Shanahan’s offense, but I still think Quinn has a lot of valuable traits as a head coach and could see success in a second stint if he can work with a front office to set up a strong offensive coaching staff. He is one of the best in the business as a motivator and man manager and obviously he has defensive nous. I do think he will need competent management to assist in assembling not just a great OC but a full staff that has continuity when said OC gets poached every few years.

I agree, I think he's a very good teacher. Like any coach especially in the modern NFL with all of its specializations a HC really is only as good as those around him in terms of overall team.

McCarthy is a good coach, but Nolan weakened his effectiveness. So yes, Shanaahan helped immensely the same really can be said about most coaches.

The only question I have about Quinn being HC is the same as what most have for him as DC... Can he adjust his preferences to the reality on the field.

This Defense has been remolded, according to what he seeks in players, his preferences though leave questions or why no real lb to solidify run? Why not more invested in big NT than Hankins and Mazi? Why does he prefer hybrid safetys? And can he adjust his preferences to draft a player outside of his mold?

But as a teacher, motivator, leader of NFL men, he is fantastic.

Thinking DQ isn’t a good HC assumes:
  • A. He hasn’t learned anything or grown as a coach since he left Atlanta.
  • B. He won’t be able to show what he’s learned since he came to Dallas.
  • C. You forgot that he already has an NFC championship on his resume as a HC in the past.
Dan Quinn’s excellence as a defensive coordinator tells me he is committed to excellence, growing and learning as a professional. I don’t know if he will be successful as a HC somewhere else, but assuming he cannot be a good HC is not a fair assumption in my opinion.
Many discount MM and he also has a SB. Some talk just to talk.

It an offensive league and anybody hiring a defensive coach will fail. Quinn was only successful in Atlanta while shanahan was there to run the offense and Matt Ryan. Once shanahan left Atlanta went down fast.
Shanahans offense still owns Quinn he better figure that out before he goes to Seattle where he will be looking up at shanahan every week
Landry only took us to Super Bowls because he had Staubach. Johnson only took us to Super Bowls because he had Aikman ... and Turner to run the offense. Only so many coaches make it to the Super Bowl and Quinn is one of them. I can see why that would be appealing to teams. But you are correct that he will need a top QB and very good offensive mind to succeed.

Didn’t seem to hurt the Patriots.
Quinn took a crap team like Atlanta to the SB and a halftime lead over NE before they imploded. People tend to focus on the final failure and being fired instead of what a coach built and accomplished.
Beli has only been good because of Brady and McDaniels. Look at what has happened since they both gone

Does every coordinator yearn to be a HC?

They're two completely different jobs. Seems like fun to sit in a climate-controlled box every game, calling defensive plays. As opposed to standing on the sidelines in the rain, worrying about personnel, administrative & clock-management matters (and dealing with the press). Assuming the money was in the same ballpark, which job would you take (and keep)?

And would you rather live in the Metroplex, or Seattle?

. Dallas was winning championships before Roger and they did after Landry had 19 consecutive winning seasons. Cuz he had his own system. Landry coaches the offense and the defense. He the only one to ever do that. Tom Landry is the greatest football mind to ever Grace the gridiron. Period. So let’s not use him as the standard for anything. Nobody can live up to that. People talk about the football Gods. Landry is among the Football Gods

Well either way I know this Dan Quinn better concentrate on getting his defense ready for Green Bay or he may not have a job period. Cuz I think Jerry expects a Super Bowl this year

It didn’t hurt the Patriots because they had Tom Brady at QB. As an HC all Quinn’s defenses did were blow big leads. His team coughed up a 20 point lead against us. He’s better suited as a coordinator.

They did not win a Super Bowl before Staubach or after Staubach. Landry was an absolutely great coach, but if we're going to knock coaches for only winning when they had great QBs, then Landry would have to be knocked as well. Landry did take Dallas to a Super Bowl with Morton as his primary QB (although Staubach played as well), but Denver also went to a Super Bowl with Morton as QB.

I think the mistake he made with Atlanta was trying to be an overseer coach and let someone else run his defense. His strength is definitely defensive play-calling. If I was him I'd stick to that just like Wade Phillips should have. The only difference is that Quinn at least showed that he could coach a team to a Super Bowl, so I can understand if he wants another shot at showing that was no fluke.

In the end it's all about the DC and OC, it's amazing any teams have continued success with all the coordinators bailing out every couple of years. It's annoying AyF.

One big reason he led Atlanta to a Super Bowl is his QB Matt Ryan had an MVP season. Usually teams with a MVP QB go deep in the playoffs. The problem all these head coaching candidates face is taking over a team with a bad QB situation. Only the Chargers have a respectable QB, however Herbert is struggling to win games.

Ever heard of an offensive coordinator?

Being a head coach with a background in defense doesn't automatically mean the offense gets ignored anymore than having an offensive minded coordinator means the defense will get ignored.

Again, most teams that have made it to a Super Bowl have had a top-notch QB. Landry had Staubach. Johnson had Aikman. Belichick had Brady. If we're going to ding one for that, we have to ding the rest.

However, I do absolutely agree that it shows (outside of a few examples) that you need to go into a good QB situation. That's why I would only consider the Chargers if I was Quinn. In Washington, he'd get to pick his QB with the No. 2 pick, but that also means you sink or swim with the rookie. By the time, he's ready to swim, you may be gone.

With Pete Carrol‘s departure announced today, Seattle suddenly seems more interesting for Dan Quinn. Returning to where he won a SB as a DC might be a draw for him.

Obviously I don’t know but I will be surprised if Sea doesn’t pursue DQ.
