I mean, Quinn did get to a Super Bowl… I realize he had an iconic collapse there but even so, he accomplished more than many head coaches have including Wade Phillips. I think if he chooses the right franchise he can do one better the second time around.

Talk by everyone but DQ.

DQ has no aspirations of leaving this team anytime soon.

The information is out there.

No. Dan Quinn is on record saying he wants to be a Hc again. He’s always said he will only consider the right opportunities but he’s interested if it comes along.

Been a lot of talk lately about Dan Quinn possibly being picked off the Cowboys staff to take a HC job again with perhaps Denver or another head coaching position that will be open this off season.

Quinn has obviously done a great job turning the Cowboys defense around. But I have been thinking lately about the comparison between Quinn and another excellent defensive coordinator who was a better DC than HC- Wade Phillips.

Wade Phillips was consistently an excellent defensive mind. As a DC, his defenses were always among the leagues best. As a head coach on the other hand, Phillips was ok- he was 82-64 in regular season as a HC. But he was 1-5 in the playoffs. Phillips won a SB ring as a DC in Denver in 2015. But he never saw that much success as a HC.

Dan Quinn was ok in Atl as a HC. 43-42 in the regular season, and 3-2 in the playoffs. But he had that collapse in the SB vs the pats and his Atl teams never recovered. Like Phillips, Quinn has a SB ring as a DC when he was in Seattle.

So is Dan Quinn a newer version of Wade Phillips? An excellent DC who isn’t as good as a HC? Or is he different?
Dan Quinn is the most highly thought of coach on the Cowboy staff. I'm thinking that he will stay in Dallas for a long time. I think that he stays as the DC and will take over as head coach when Mike decides to leave. I think that he will be good as a head coach too, but he really enjoys running the defense.

Quinn will definitely be hungry for another HC opportunity. Even Wade Phillips had multiple chances (Denver, Buffalo, and Dallas) so Quinn will want to give it another shot

the same Kyle Shanahan that mysteriously stop running the ball in two different SBs....?

The point is he has proven himself imo, Quinn is unproven as far as being a HC is concerned.

I think the only HC job Quinn might end up with is Denver because it's not an appealing job at the moment. You have a washed QB that you are stuck with for years because of an albatross contract and no draft picks this year. OTOH the new owner is loaded and can pay you a whole lot of money. I think generally offensive coaches are in higher demand as head coaches though.

IMO, Quinn is not the HC you want to turn a bad franchise around. He is competent from an Xs and Os perspective, but I wouldn't call him a defensive genius. He never had better than average talent on D for 6 years in Atlanta, and never delivered better than average results. And while the Cowboys players plainly love him, I wouldn't call him a "culture" guy. There was a stink of flop sweat for his last couple years in Atlanta that he never overcame... it was one underachieving 8-8 year after another, one coordinator firing after another, and he never came up with any answers.

He's in a good spot right now... he loves this Cowboys D, and they love him. But if you gave him a teardown job like say the Colts where he is starting with bare bones on defense. Or brought him into Denver and told him to turn around a team that already believes it's screwed for the next 2 or 3 seasons. I don't think he builds either one into winners.

His best coaching-carousel job is probably Carolina. There are some seriously talented pieces on that D like Jaycee Horn, Brian Burns, and Derrick Brown. And while the Panthers' management has been schizophrenic, the players aren't cashing it in yet. They fought hard after a horrible start.

The million-dollar question with that job is "who will my QB be". But if you ask Quinn to motivate a talented defense, and get them playing fast, aggressive ball like Dallas... I think he can do that.

Wade is the better coach.
Quinn commands more respect.
Toss up.
But, bland men and scalawags, Wade is the best dancer!

Hard to explain why but Wade had a pattern of staying only 3-4 years in most, if not all his DC jobs.

Poor input into the draft process?

Jenkins pooped out on us, while Almost Anthony really just had one strong season, and that his 6th. Lee wasn't even starting in 2010.

Stats that matter:
5th in points allowed. (19)
1st in forced turnovers(32)
1st in turnover differential (+11) (even with a QB who gives away more than ANYBODY else)
Most of all, it's the intangibles:

Our defense never quits they play as a team at 100% all the time.
4-5 guys show up on a tackle.

Pursuit all the time.
If they have a bad game they come out in the media wed-thur and start talking about things like show boating , keeping to their responsibilities.

that's all coach speak and having your players repeat it is the highest form of respect.
With as many as 6 or 7 head coaches needed this year, Quinn will be gone and then we'll know exactly how valuable he was to this team.

I think as an owner spending a lot of $$ to put an entertaining winning product on the field the DQ Rivera Fangio mold of an experienced and yes older DC are going to become further out from hiring as HC.

Rams Bengals Chargers 49ers Miami to a certain extent although they’ve collapsed and have real QB issues the Eagles Vikings Packers have gone in another direction away from the DC mentality of a HC and have gone younger OC driven .

That’s the direction as an owner I would go . Both the Eagle and Cowboy OC are going to become HC as well as the QB coach Kafka with the Giants who coached Mahomes in KC.

And Doug Nussmeier the early 50’s QB coach in Dallas has really helped both Dak & Rush would make an ideal candidate to replace KM once he leaves as HC. Nussmeier had stops in Alabama Florida Michigan in the college ranks coached under Saban . He knows offense .

Eberflus DC Chicago now HC that’s been an outright disaster as you try and develop a franchise QB in Fields. That’s got to be a short window in Chicago he’s under . They are not competitive.

Nussmeier is not old and the continuity to your 140 million man who has 2 yrs left in this contract and perhaps Jerry signs him to another deal would be a good move . The QB play in Dallas relative to the garbage put at the curb in some NFL towns is striking example Washington Atlanta the Jets . Like it or not the Cowboys have one of the top offenses in the NFL the QB coach must be doing something right . Cooper Rush 4-1 as a back up .

Yeah. Sorry if I want to see a different scheme. Been watching Garrett's fingerprints too long.
