In the past two seasons, Sharper has been thrown at a total of 76 times. In that time frame, he recorded 10 interceptions. That means that Sharper intercepted the ball 13.2% of the times which he was targeted. If he were targeted at the same rate as Hamlin and he maintained his INT rate, then he would have had 5.4 INTs over the past two years.

but he wasn't targeted at the same rate as Hamlin, and he didn't have 5.4 INT over the past 2 years...right? quit with the useless facts. The FACT is he had 9 INT this year and tremendously helped a very poor safety position in NO.

I'm not talking up Ken Hamlin, I'm saying that the FS position just doesn't get a lot of opportunities to make plays in our scheme. They just aren't thrown at very often. Sharper is a play maker, I'm not disputing that, I'm just saying that he wouldn't have a large impact on our defense.

He has everywhere else hes been. Our D would be the best hes played on.

(IF he werent damaged goods etc.)

I think once we get some plays on made on D it will completely take our D to a new level. And I can definetely see us getting Earl Thomas or Atogwe.

Jerry definitely has made it clear he sees the need there. That, and getting returners and O Line depth

That number doesn't mean anything without also knowing how many times he was targeted. It's like comparing two baseball players, one with a .303 batting average and the other at .370.

The raw numbers would make you say that player #2 is the better hitter (for avg.). However, that changes if you also look at the total number of at-bats and you see that player #1 has 150 plate appearances and player #2 has 30.

No thanks... I want a long-term solution. Welcome to Dallas Otagwe.

Not sure I would consider Otagwe a long term solution when realistically you have no idea how he will be health wise for the coming season.

Good points..If we are not going to put our Safety in position to make plays than I don't see the need to get a play making safety.

Why is Hamlin not getting into these throws?

We had some leads, teams were in comeback mode and he still never found the ball

Our secondary is set up around the strength of our CBs, that's who we want the other team to target. Like Jason Garrett said in an interview, as an offense, you take what the defense gives you. We give opponents our CBs. Other teams do the same thing, it's why Reevis was the third most targeted corner last year. It's why Rodgers-Cromartie was the most targeted, Jenkins was the 11th, Leon Hall was the 13th and Newman was the 14th.

We let teams throw at our CBs, that's why Hamlin isn't around to make plays.

Let's see, these are basically the FS options that fans see for Dallas.

A. Do nothing and keep Ken Hamlin.

B. Sign Darren Sharper for 1 year and then try and find another solution in 2011. The last part is rarely considered, and I can't help but wonder why.

C. Sign another Free Agent and pray that he is better than Ken Hamlin.

D. See if a FS we like falls to us in the 2010 Draft and proceed from there whether one does or doesn't.

I wish I could understand why B or C are better options than D. I think there is way too much panic about A.

You know, I wish all the hysteria could be chalked up to off-season madness.

Unfortunately...

Arent we going to need to find someone in 2011 regardless?

Im not really in favor of Sharper. Partly b/c were not getting him so Im not attaching myself to him. But I do believe we want to get Earl Thomas R1 or Nate Allen R2. If we dont then we turn our attention to Atogwe.

Should they address this offseason, as I believe they should, I'd rather they addressed it with a potential long term solution than a band aid one that will be around for only a year.

ET or Allen in rounds 1 or 2 would be nice, but to be honest I don't think the team has FS rated as high as many here think. If those players are there, Im sure he'd pull the trigger, but if not he won't lose any sleep. Most likely Hamlin starts another year, or they go after OJ, he could be plugged in there for 4-5 years possibly. If Hamlin does stay and dissapoints, I think they go safety very early in 2011. Guys like DeAndre Mcdaniel, Rahim Moore, maybe Tyler Sash, theres some real good safeties next year.

Does anyone have a gif of that last Eagles game, where Jeremy Maclin stopped looking for the ball halfway into his route because he was watching Ken Hamlin coming across for the knockout hit?
