Twitter: Darren Woodson: "They Tackle like it's Flag Football"

Why are you guys talking about the NFL? Did you read the article? Woody is talking strictly about the Cowboys. Who do you think he's referring to here....
"But these guys … I don’t know. They’re helping up runners. Giving love taps on helmets. After the game, sure, it’s a brotherhood. But between the lines, where’s the animosity? We just don’t see anger in this defense’s veins."

#1 goal this off-season should be to get rid of Jaylon Smith.

Props to Woody for speaking up. More ex-Cowboys should be speaking up against this filth Jerry has built.

Business decisions are being made and they should then be made aware of what the NFL letters really mean. Not For Long when you make those decisions.

what was it coach parcells said...lawyers got involved and ruined the game.
you can't tackle anymore.
you can't practice tackling as much any more.
you have limited practices in pads.
all of that plus...this season with covid restrictions...have really caused fundamentals to be a mess.
let them have more full-padded practices with drills and it'll get much better.

You wouldn't think this would be an issue at the pro level, especially since these guys being tackling since pee wee football. So it's not they can't or don't know how....which brings me to coaching. Sit them down if they won't tackle, plain and simple.

Watching X Woods at the position, must make Woodson sick. He is one of the worst tackling safeties in the entire league. I would love an instinctive safety with high level ball skills, but we truly need safeties who can actually tackle. Look what Wilson did against Minnesota, that's what we need.

He is right you know. This falls on the coaching staff and players. Nolan has to go!

Goes back to the thread why football is hard to watch nowadays.

Cant play hard hitting football anymore, can't touch the quarterback basically, can't play physically against the recievers. Football has turned into basketball 2.0 for defense which is why basketball is a joke sport now. Safety changes such as helmet to helmet or blind sided hits are perfect changes however the rest suck. Why you will see stats increase and records broken for years to come

However fundamentals still need to apply which most players lack on the cowboys

In defense of the players, they have to worry about hitting high, hitting low, leading with helmet, defenseless players, hitting too hard, etc. I suspect a lot of the arm tackling is the result of players who struggle to tackle without leading with their helmets. I also think the money has something to do with it too. An injury could cost a player millions.

Every team in the league does that stuff (helping each other up, smiling/laughing after plays, etc.)

When I played, there was the old adage that. "When you let up, that's when you get hurt." Anyone else find this to be true? I know I did ...

It night and day watching the Cowboys-Cardinals game.

Cardinal defenders wanted to punish our guys and laid out some clean good hits. This team tackles like they were in a pillow fight.

i think woody would have adapted his play and found a way to be successful within the confines of the rules....great players overcome and adapt.
Possibly. I'm not denying he was a great player, I just think the rules have changed so much that it's at least debatable. The defense has taken a back seat more and more every season.

Concussion lawsuit and players bargaining less practice and contact time. You used to cheer big hits, now you wait for the flag...

I don't know about the rest of the NFL. All I can say for sure is that the product the Cowboys put out there on Sunday is the worst one yet. It is closer to an exhibition game than anything else. Completely uninspiring.
Like watching the Pro Bowl. :p

Darren Woodson - the last real Safety the Cowboys had. What a travesty Jones has made this franchise.

Not sure if you remember but tackling one of the major reasons we drafted Woods, Lewis, and Awuzie.

Woods was terrible in that area as a rookie and hasn't improve since he's been here. Wasn't Awuzie benched against the Eagles last yr cause he made a business decision? Lewis always has been a good tackler, but his coverage abilities are average at best. I really hope the team moves on from all 3 of them in the off-season.

I had a giggle during the last Cowboy game watching one particular tackle by LVE. I dont recall exactly but with one hand he grabbed the runners butt cheek, or upper thigh and nearly the butt cheek and with the other hand grabbed, well I forget exactly where but my point is how good it was. LVE may not be having the best of years but his fundamentals are good, you are tackling a moving human body, stop just trying to pop them with blunt force and actually get a hold of some body parts for goodness sake.

The ESPN highlights they used to show where defenders “blew up” people was a major contributor to the decline of the art of tackling.

This, and players want to get a guy down with minimal effort and not going to the ground (sorry, Dez catch theorists, lol) if they don't have to. I saw this in that wild Cleveland-Baltimore game where a DB hit a TE without wrapping up in the opposite direction of another DB trying to make a hit without wrapping up and the 2nd guy's hit actually helped the TE to keep his balance and keep running for more yards. The other thing I've seen that makes me shake my head is when a guy delivers a good hit and in his rush to get up and take credit, he doesn't realize he caused a fumble that he was probably in great position to recover if he wasn't trying to celebrate first. Those old school defensive grinder games are so few and far between nowadays. The best recent one I can remember was that Seattle-Arizona Sunday night game a few years back that ended in a 6-6 tie and had like 2 blocked FGs I think.

He is one of the worst tackling safeties in the entire league.
Glad people are finally recognizing this.

I've watched him duck tackles for 4 seasons but every year I hear the Front Office and Fan Boys hype him up.
