If he is on the NFL Reserve/Did not Report List then he is in danger of losing a year towards UFA if he doesn't report by Monday. He would be a RFA again for 2019 if he doesn't get to camp 30 days before the first game.

If he is on the NFI-Non football injury, then it doesn't apply..... not sure about the Suspended List.... but officially his Suspension doesn't start until Game 1..... he may be a lost cause any way we look at it

Any clarification would be appreciated

I thought he got prior team approval. Maybe that doesn't effect the rule, but I'd bet he probably got that in writing in a way that doesn't hurt him.

I don't think that's the case. It seems that the team is allowing him to take time away, which to be honest, makes sense. This allows us to better prepare the guys who will help us in games 1-4. Irving can arrive after he gets his life in order and earn playing time back once he's eligible.

Getting permission makes sense

Looks like CLE's Josh Gordon will never be a UFA

This is what I thought........his four-game pretty much wipes put his chance 2019 free agent coz he would old the Cowboys for missing the four games. I could wrong but that's my understanding.

If he is a RFA then does that mean we can put a second round tender on him again next year? We can pick him up for peanuts again. Man I hate it for this guy but he does it to himself. If he kept his nose clean then after this year he would be getting paid real good money. He will end up making under 3 million again next year?

That is what it would mean..... another 2nd round tender.... and frankly it is the only way I would sign him

I would not extend him to a big deal with guarantees

The 4 game suspension wouldn't make lose a year of service time.... you only need 6 games to get a year.... it all has to do with not reporting while under contract

Aaron Donald lost a year last year and will lose another year this year since he held out until Sept both years.... he will only have 3 years of service time after this year and will be a RFA .... he has no leverage but his play

Once again we will get a 10-15 million dollar a year player for about 3. I would sign him to a 3 year deal if it was cheap and his guaranteed money was protected with provisions of him keeping his nose clean. He gets in trouble and the guaranteed is null and void.

Don't suspensions void the guaranteed money? I'd still put it in the contract. Actually they should make it more of an incentive based deal, if they can get him to sign it.

Well I just re-read your post, only this time I tried to pay better attention.

Lol, I do think it has to be in the contract. I know TWill has guaranteed money coming this year. He got dui and I think he still gets his money.

No way I sign Irving to a deal that it’s not in his contract. I would offer him 5 million a year for 3 years and I think the man would sign it. I would fully guarantee it as long as he stays out of trouble. Actually you could offer him big money and he won’t be able to collect it all because he won’t ever stay out of trouble. I don’t think he has had a year with us yet where he wasn’t suspended.

I look at him like a good insurance policy. He won't be available for the first 5 games. No point in him practicing now and getting hurt. Keep him away from camp right now. If the defensive line is doing well 5 weeks into the season, Irving might not even be needed and the Cowboys can cut him. If the DL isn't doing so well or if there is a need due to injury then bring Irving in at that time.

I would not be surprised if the DL were playing well in camp that Irving might be dumped before the season starts. I have a feeling Irving will not be needed.

Unfortunately, I'm not certain that it matters. It appears his time with the team might be at an end.

True no need to rush someone who won't play the first 4 games.

I doubt very much that the league applies this rule to someone seeking rehab treatment. That would be a complete disincentive to getting help.
