Well I've achieved a historical feat about half an hour ago, the handle on my bedroom door is jammed and when I unwittingly shut it I trapped myself in my own room.

I've tried in vain for about twenty minutes to do everything short of breaking down the door.

I've even called roommates to come help but they are at work, I've resigned myself at present to the fact that I am now this generation's "Baby Jessica".

Stay tuned, I have no tools, my phone is dying and I need to go to the bathroom.

Hour one of this comical but annoying event.

If you get hungry, start off by eating your weakside arm. Then move on to your feet.

That's what you get.

At least you aren't stuck in the closet.

Break the door, who cares. It's not like you are expecting female company anytime soon.

haha.

5 bucks says it is a kwikset lock with a plastic latch and one side of the latch has broken. When you grip the handle to turn it is it really stiff then gives way and just spins?

Those kwikset locks are the worst.
I have a former neighbor (as of a week ago) who is gay. He and 3 friends got locked in one time because of this very reason, and he called me for help. They were seriously stuck. So I had to have them open the living room window, I removed the screen and was going to climb in and remove the pins of the door so they could get out. I got my foot hung up on the window sill and nearly killed myself climbing through the window.

One of the guys locked in (he's now sort of famous) says to me, "oh be careful. You don't want to come to and have the 4 of us standing over you."

I had to laugh.

Okay, here's something to try. Apply some pressure on the door handle that pushes it towards the hinges. The tail that goes through the latch may then be able to make some contact with the broken latch mechanism. Keep the pressure on it and slowly turn the handle and see if it makes any kind of contact with anything.

If that doesn't work can you see the hinge pins on your door? If so remove them. All you need is something to put underneath the hinge and push the hinge pins, and something to tap it with. This will knock the pins out the top.

Once the pins are removed pry the backside (hinge side) of the door out of the jamb. It should come free easily.

Pee, and buy yourself a new handle.

Knocking the hinge pins out isn't working? Or leverage to try and trigger the latch?

My hinge pins are from the 1940s and rusted in place plus I have nothing more than a fork to use as a tool. the pressure was unsuccessful as well.

You have a fork? Well why didn't you say so?

See if you can slip the end of the fork between the door and the jamb downward and trigger the latch form the back side.

Sadly it appears I'm dealing with a World War II era door that was built to last and it is not giving any ground at all.

Got a shoe string?

Use the fork to feed it past the latch and down. Once you have ends of the shoe string above and below the latch pull it until the latch releases.

If this doesn't work you might seriously consider 911.

It might be wise to continue posting.

You are only about 167 posts away from 4,000.

Maybe that'll help.
