Broaddus: DE Rotation, Jaylon Smith’s Work Among 9 Walkthrough Thoughts

OXNARD, Calif. – Even in Monday’s non-contact walkthrough, there was plenty to start learning about the Cowboys at training camp. Here are nine observations as camp gets underway:

Read

  • There is nothing better than to watch Sean Lee communicate with his defensive teammates. Pre-snap, he was verbally identifying each offensive set while Dak Prescott and Travis Frederick were trying to counter his adjustments. For a walkthrough practice, there was some serious back and forth between all involved in order to get their guys in position to execute the play. It had a regular-season game feel to it.
Read

  • I observed DeMarcus Lawrence, Benson Mayowa, Taco Charlton, Damontre Moore and Charles Tapper all take snaps at right defensive end in the walkthrough.
Read

  • Really do like the quickness of Stephen Paea off the snap. This is the first opportunity we’ve had to see him live on the practice field. Paea is currently playing behind Cedric Thornton at the nose tackle.
Read

  • James Hanna was running second tight end behind Jason Witten with Geoff Swaim backing them both up. Hanna missed the entire 2016 season with a knee injury. His movement was smooth and without any bit of labor. Having Hanna back in the lineup will make this club even better running the ball off the edge.
Read

  • Speaking of looking smooth, Jaylon Smith did a nice job in his morning work. I finally saw a bit of a burst that I was looking for. There was a snap where he had a carry a tight end in coverage and did so without issue. He also was able to close the hole on an edge run with some range.

We still want to run some 12 personnel so 4 TE's is not impossible, plus TE's tend to play a lot of Special Teams. It's doable.
Stephen Jones was talking 10 DL, 6 DE and 4 DT FWIW. I can see a numbers crunch somewhere.

Would be a shame if Rico doesn't make the team.. seems to me, Romo spoke highly about his progression last season. At 6'8" and his athletic ability, he would virtually be unstoppable even if all he played was Redzone offense. Another year under his belt, Rico really could be a threat. But most here would rather Dallas draft 'em, coach 'em, then let him sign somewhere else. I'd rather give the guy a chance. Hell, the last TE Romo really liked will be wearing a gold jacket when his career is done.

They can still keep 4 TE's and 6 WR's. Go less at RB, as Rod Smith can be the 3rd RB.
Last year they went 4 RB's and 2 FB's. So with 3 RB's and 1 FB, there is one spot.

They can go 9 DL 10 DB, or 10 DL, 9 DB, they do not have to keep 10 at both.
It comes down to who is the 53rd best player, who is healthy. Is White at CB better than rico at TE, what are the long term prospects as well. Is Noah Brown better than White or Woods or Blanton, or Paea or Ivy.

And with the cut down from 90 to 53 all at once, it sure will have fans, but more so players, on the edge waiting.

It will be interesting to see different opinions on each as TC progresses.
