That's a valid point.
Either by draft or my free agent pickup another guy needs to be brought in.
Agree. I'm perfectly fine with McFadden coming back and being a part of the offense next year. I am not fine with expecting him to have any guaranteed level of health. I dunno who the team could draft, but they're in a prime spot at the top of the 2nd round to get a 1st round faller at RB if that player exists. The 2nd round has been a very good round for RBs over the past 3 drafts.
Jeremy Hill
Giovanni Bernard
Le'Veon Bell
Carlos Hyde (certainly looks capable but is saddled with a piss poor offense)
T.J. Yeldon
Eddie Lacy
Pretty quality list for 3 drafts considering only 10 players have been taken at RB in the 2nd round during that span. Those not on the list are Bishop Sankey, Montee Ball, Christine Michael, and Ameer Abdullah. Abdullah could probably be added to the list as he had a decent rookie season given his 9 or so carries per game.
I really think the 2nd round is the prime round to pick a RB. No doubt the explosion of the passing game has diminished a RB's value, but seeing how that is represented in the draft is kind of interesting.
From 2000 to 2009:

From 2010 to 2015:Total 1st Round RBs: 9
Top 10 Picks: 3

Not so surprising to see such a decline in total RBs taken, but look at the 16 - 27 range. Just nothing. Late-teens to low-twenties is just non-existent and it accounted for almost half of total picks in the previous decade. It's almost like any RB who isn't regarded as a top 15 prospect has little chance of getting drafted in the 1st round. Every RB outside of the top 15 gets pushed to the 2nd round, and maybe only those who would have previously had a solid mid-1st round grade will sneak into the very end of the 1st round.
If Dallas goes to the draft for a RB, I can't see any better spot to pick a RB than in the 2nd round. Of course, it requires that there are RBs worth the pick, but if recent history has shown us anything it would be that RBs who fall to the 2nd round might represent some of the best value on the board.
