Titans Eying Canty; Bill Wants Berger Again

Posted by mickshot at 2/27/2009 11:26 AM CST on truebluefanclub.com

The free-agency frenzy has begun, and while the Cowboys appear to be sitting tight, a couple of their eight unrestricted free agents already are hitting the road.

Cowboys starting right defensive end Chris Canty, having canceled a Friday visit to Washington after the Commanders inked defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth at like 4:30 a.m. (CST) – just 4½ hours after the start of free agency – has a trip scheduled for Saturday to meet with Tennessee Titans officials. The Titans obviously are looking to replace Haynesworth on their defensive line.

But according to Canty’s agent, Brad Blank, those thoughts of the Dolphins being interested in his client might not be totally accurate since they spent three recent draft choices on defensive ends and didn’t seem willing to spend want Blank thinks is market value for the Cowboys’ four-year veteran. That, according to sources being quoted, seems to be $8 million a year – probably far more than the Cowboys are willing to pay.

Instead, the Dolphins appear ready to reclaim one of their own who had landed in Dallas for 2½ seasons, expected to sign guard Joe Berger as soon as Friday. Berger, maybe more of a favorite of Cowboys former offensive line coach Tony Sparano, now the Dolphins head coach, than current line coach Hudson Houck, was inactive for 13 games this past season. Berger was with the Dolphins for the 2005 season and part of 2006 before getting released and claimed by the Cowboys when Bill Parcells was the head coach.

I don't understand why we kept this guy on the roster all year long when he couldn't beat our Cory Procter and now we let him go for nothing.

We coulda kept Walden or someone else instead last year. Oh well.

In my opinion, it's indicative of a real underlying problem with this team's offensive line.

I think this team is greatly lacking any decent backups on the O-line - specifically at center and tackle.

Even when they need a backup lineman, they're forced to trade for one (Holland).

And given the tender that an overmatched player like Procter got, it looks to be continuing.

I'm just hoping they finally manage to draft some decent options this year.

Wanting $8 million and getting $8 million are two different things.

8 mill a year isn't the issue -- it is how much bonus he gets. I'd happily give a guy 8 mill a year if he only wanted 10 mill up front.

If Sporano and Bill want Berger then he probably should have been playing over Procter. I've got no confidence in our team to evaluate or coach offensive linemen.

I see what you mean, but I don't trust Parcells to draft an offensive lineman.

Or they liked Procter but did not want to trade a 2nd pick for proctor...since the cowboys put a tender on Proctor.

So they settled for Berger

if they offered a 7th for Proctor we would have taken it - instead they'll just wait until we cut him

I feel like they got something right with Montrae Holland, but then again they didn't really have to evaluate him and it took forever for him to actually play. So I guess I'm agreeing with this. How bad is the crop of backups on this team if Cory Procter can play as much as he did? Either there are guys that didn't play, but should've or we have a bunch of guys who need to be churned off the team. Maybe it's both, but the situation needs to be remedied sooner than later.

Dolphins will host Dallas offensive lineman Berger

The Miami Dolphins, who are looking for an upgrade at center, will host Dallas Cowboys free agent Joe Berger Friday. According to the Miami Herald, the team could sign Berger Friday.

Berger played for the Dolphins in 2005-2006 before going to the Cowboys. He can play center and guard and his price appears right for Miami.

The Dolphins will not meet with Baltimore Ravens center Jason Brown, who wants between $7-$8 million a year, a price too steep for Miami.

The Holland situation is another example of ineptitude, at least on some level.

What does it say when the guys on your roster are so pitiful, that you have to trade for someone else rather than play any othe guys you have when your starter gets hurt?

And I thought Holland played well when he finally got the chance. My next question would be - what took so long for him to get that chance?

We all saw how Procter struggled and how that hurt the offense, why didn't the 'braintrust'?

And next, if Free and McQuistan are so incapable that you'd rather put a crippled, one-armed Flozell Adams out there, why are they here?

And why put a 2nd round tender on a guy who's overmatched in the strength and power department when there's no chance of that issue changing?

This team's repetitive mistakes and failures in the offensive line area have to change.

Now with Hanesworth playing in our division - how much more imperative is it that we draft at least some big guards/tackles early this year ? Robinson, Herman etc...

What does it say when the guy you traded for can't bust into the lineup for like, forever?
