DC.COM Blog: Is Carpenter's Play Changing Perceptions?

In coverage, I agree. Burnett wasn't near as good a coverage linebacker as he was made out to be. He made some nice plays there, but was not as consistent as Carpenter seems to be.

In aggressiveness, run defense and blitzing, I give the edge to Burnett. Burnett had an attack mentality, which is probably what hurt him in coverage at times.

Lol Burnett has as many sacks as Carpenter this year despite starting and only had 3 in the four years he was the nickel backer.

Oh and Burnett plays 1st and 2nd downs and has as many TFL as Carp.

SO Burnett is better but produces less....

It's kinda interesting how everyone slams Carpenter.

From what I recall about the NFL draft, players don't draft themselves on to the NFL teams.

When Parcells selected him, I guess Carpenter should have said "Gee coach, I'm really not as good as you think I am, so I'm going to decline signing with any team until the fourth round"

Carpenter is a wuss...

And it's a testimony to Wade as a DC, that he could get Carpenter a sack...

All I can say about CArpenter is that he must be working hard in practice because his teammates obviously were thrilled about his sack. He had a lot of different guys find him on the sideline and give him props...guys from both sides of the ball.

I think his teammates appreciate him and the work he must be putting in more than we fans do.

They're probably just shedding any leftover guilt for dubbing him "Barbie" on HBO.

:D

carpenter is still a bust. a first round pick needs to be a starter. it has been four years and now he finally playing a role on this team as a nickel lb is pathetic to me. carpenter needs to go when his contract runs out and do not let him back on the team. parcells really screwed this team with carpenter as a first round pick. i hope that jason williams can fill his role next year.

If he is starting in two years when Brooking is gone, will he be considered a success then?

He is progressing, even if it is slowly. May pay off yet.

Pathetic? Really? That seems harsh to me. Disappointing sure but I give the guy credit for not giving up, for staying focused on football. It can't be easy and I know that catching on with an NFL team even for one year is something 99.9% of people can only dream about.

come on carpenter would not even be here if he was not a first round draft pick. jones just wants to save himself from making a mistake in being talked into by parcells to draft carperter with a first pick. i know pathetic is a little harsh to say but still he has been a waste of good roster spot considering how much he being paid to just be a nickel linebacker.

You are conveniently jumping over the fact that the guy cant tackle, and avoids contact, something required of an every down LB. Your premise wont happen. Those pink gloves are perfect for him, all he needs is a matching pink helmit.

Really? One sack where the guy runs straight at the QB? Why on earth would that change anything?

C'mon now. The guy is playing his role well. I don't see him being a Mo here but he is made to be a nickel LBer. He's covering his guy. Just don't expect a lot of run support from him.

I didn't say Burnett was a better player. I'd rather have the better coverage man on the field in passing situations.

Hopefully, we can get more perfectly timed blitzes from Carp like we saw Sunday. Burnett did that well and came up to take on blockers well. That doesn't always result in sacks or tackles, but those were areas he was good at as Dallas' nickel LB.

Too much was made of the "Barbie" comment. That came from Marc Colombo, who seems to be in the circle of friends (along with Romo and Witten) with Carpenter, but also is known for his mean streak. I'm sure Colombo gets acerbic with everyone on defense.

I've seen no evidence that Carp's teammates dislike him.

I think he is pretty decent in the role he is in.

But he still is not physical at all and there is no way we could ever use him as a every down guy.

Hes playing solid as Nicklebacker though.

Ware, Carpenter, Spencer, and Brooking will be one of the most successful LB groups the NFL has ever seen. After we win the Sb this year it will be proposed, and after we win the one next year, it will be established.
