Due to the terrific news about special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis' release from Parkland Hospital, our Josh Ellis postponed his story on DeAngelo Smith and Mike Mickens until perhaps later in the week.

The Cowboys hope Smith and Mickens, former college teammates at Cincinnati, can develop into effective defensive backs. Mickens in particular wants to prove he's better than his seventh-round tag and fully recovered from the knee injury that dropped his draft stock.

Mickens practiced without any visible limitations at the rookie mini-camp and says he feels 100 percent. But he told me he hadn't participated in a full practice since last November, so naturally his conditioning is an issue right now.

"I’m just getting more comfortable," he said. "I was a little uncomfortable and rusty (the first day of practice) with all the techniques. And now I just told myself I’m just going to come out here and compete and do what I do best – cover people.”

Man, if this kid can develop into a Scandrick like steal, then look out because our secondary will be stout.

We are having the best secondary in the league this year. We did nothing but upgrade. They could start Deangelo and Mickens and we'd still be ballin..Mix in a little Scandrick..Newman..Jenkins..Sensy..and the best sacking defense in the NFL..DISGUSTING! Where are all the haters at?

With all this "talent" we better be able to stop people on 3rd down.

Our defense was an epic fail on 3rd down.

Yeah where is all that "talent" when it's a critical play in a game... They seem to come up small.

I hope Mickens can contribute, he's got a perfect opportunity in front of him to make this roster.

TNew, Jenkins, Scandrick, Smith and Mickens make us as deep at CB as we have been in many years. Best of all we are very very young. Anthony Henry wouldn't have made the final 53 this year IMO.

Mickens was my favorite choice in this Draft. When I saw that we had taken Smith I thought, "I wish it was Mickens." To get him in the 7 is serendipitous indeed.

TNew has to stay healthy, which I'd be surprised if he does.

Jenkins has to man up on tackling, which I hope he does.

Smith will start out as a FS and they hope he can compete at CB (per Campo).

Scandrick I feel will be the top CB on this team this year.

Mickens will be the steal of the draft.

We have the potential to have a top secondary, but I think we've heard those words before about this team. Let's see how they do before we annoint them with anything.

Weren't we as deep as we had ever been at corner LAST year? How'd that work out? I'll wait to see what these young guys bring to camp. :)

I have high hopes for the secondary, but I'm going to reserve judgment because there is just so much we don't know about with this group.

There is a lot of talent there, but talent doesn't always translate to success, especially when you're relying on a lot of young players.

How, how quickly Newman has fallen from the graces of some Cowboy fans.

Y'all are insane if you think Newman is injury prone or trash..the guy gets injured one year out of 7 seasons and he's injury prone. Please spare me the ignorance.
