Due to the terrific news about special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis' release from Parkland Hospital, our Josh Ellis postponed his story on DeAngelo Smith and Mike Mickens until perhaps later in the week.
The Cowboys hope Smith and Mickens, former college teammates at Cincinnati, can develop into effective defensive backs. Mickens in particular wants to prove he's better than his seventh-round tag and fully recovered from the knee injury that dropped his draft stock.
Mickens practiced without any visible limitations at the rookie mini-camp and says he feels 100 percent. But he told me he hadn't participated in a full practice since last November, so naturally his conditioning is an issue right now.

"I’m just getting more comfortable," he said. "I was a little uncomfortable and rusty (the first day of practice) with all the techniques. And now I just told myself I’m just going to come out here and compete and do what I do best – cover people.”
