I love Columbo and the fire he brings to the game, but in the first game the Eagles had 4 sacks. In this last one I don't know if they had any. I'm not saying it was on Columbo or not I'm just saying that Free has only given up 1 or 2 since he has been inserted in the starting lineup. I believe they should go with the hot hand for this game and let Columbo come back next week if they really feel he should.

I say this is great news because one thing you can't have enough of on a playoff team, is quality depth! Sometimes injuries give us a glimpse of having quality personel that would have otherwise been burried behind the current starter (Free), and sometimes, but very rarely, they reveal your next star (Austin).

I'm glad Free had the chance to sho what he was made of when we needed him the most, but let's not forget why everyone was so crushed when they first heard the news about Colombo. He's a big, aggressive tackle that gives our line an attitude...and his veteran savvy will be needed tremendously in the heated battles from this point on.

If Colombo truly isn't ready to go just yet, then I would agree replacing Free at this point would be a mistake. However, I am confident our coaches realize what's at stake here, and would only play him if they knew he was able to give us 100%. I really do hope they find a way to use Free in substitutions or special blocking packages where he may come in handy. It's not a good time to make a change at a critical spot such as LT right now, but I think we have definitely found Flo's replacement possibly as early as next season.

Wade said today that Colombo is the leader of the O-line and a tremendous leader overall. I'm sure they'd rather have his experience right now rather than a guy who's only played a few NFL games in his life.

Perhaps especially given all of the blitzing the Cowboys expect to see on Saturday.

So what, if Colombo struggles we can't bring in Free?

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. If Colombo is still rusty and is having problems blocking his man, then Free goes back into the lineup next series.

This is not exactly rocket science here.

I just don't want Colombo going down and hurting his leg again. I'd rather keep him healthy until next season - we're good enough to win the Super Bowl with Free playing, in my opinion.

Doug Free is the prototypical LT. Definitely starting to look like the clock is ticking on Flozell.

Free will replace Flozel at LT when the time comes. Free should actually be a better LT than RT because his strenght is pass blocking and he has excellent agaility. RT is more based on strenght, thus Colombo is way better than Free at RT.

I think Flozel probably plays another season before we move on with Free.

Wade has done a good job with the D this year no doubt but these are the kind of silly Wade moves that may end up costing him his job.

What we have now is working why mess with a good thing in the playoffs?!

:bang2:

Wade does not determine who plays on the offense side of the ball. The decision to make a change is decided by Garrett and Jerry with Wade being notified of the decision.

Wade is here to coach the defense and he has no say or control whatsoever with what goes on with the offense. To this day, I have never seen a game in which Wade and Garrett are talking to each other on the sideline. Wade stays to his area and has his playsheet for calling defensive plays and Garrett stays to the side with his playsheet for calling offenseive plays.

That is why we have basically 2 head coaches, one for offense and one for the defense.

IRVING, Texas - When Marc Colombo broke his fibula and suffered a high ankle sprain against Green Bay in November, a number of his teammates came by to shake his hand in the locker room following the game.

The Cowboys at first believed he would be out for the season. Last week, with his rehab from ankle surgery winding down, Colombo's fellow offensive lineman were giving him a hand again, this time applauding in unison as he stepped onto the field at Valley Ranch for the first time in six weeks.

On Tuesday Colombo practiced for the first time since the injury. After nearly two months of recovery, the Cowboys plan to reinsert him as the starter at right tackle in Saturday's wild card playoff against Philadelphia.

"It seems like forever," Colombo said. "I started doing on-the-field stuff two weeks ago. And I had sort of mini-practices last week, three in a row to kind of build up my stamina, and we're going at it this week pretty good. . . . I had a target date of the last game of the season or first game of the playoffs. There wasn't one point when I said I don't think I'm going to make it, it just worked out just right."

Colombo takes over for third-year tackle Doug Free, who has played well in relief duty. To regain his job, Colombo had to shake off any rust which might have accumulated with the layoff, and get himself back in shape.

"Everything is about the work you've put in beforehand," Colombo said. "Maybe some of those problems will arise - I'm not saying they won't. But me and our athletic trainer Britt Brown and Joe Juraszek, our strength coach, have been working to kind of do stuff that's going to be relevant to what I'm about to go do.

"We did a lot of football stuff as far as rehabbing. We've been going at it pretty good and I've been working really hard to make sure the transition is going to be as successful as possible."

Colombo may have to play through some pain, though he is regarded as one of the Cowboys' toughest players. A first-round pick of Chicago in 2002, he battled knee trouble early in his career but has become a mainstay on the Cowboys' offensive line, starting as the right bookend since the beginning of the 2006 season. He inked a four-year, $22 million contract extension with the team on Dec. 8, 2008.

After playing in only 23 games during his first four years in the NFL, Colombo had started 57 straight for the Cowboys until Packers defensive lineman Johnny Jolly fell into his left ankle. Colombo was taken off the field on a cart, and had to spend several weeks in a walking boot after surgery. The 31-year old said the injuries early in his career might have given him some perspective in dealing with his latest.

"The stuff that's in the past is in the past," Colombo said. "But as far as rehabbing, you kind of have a better idea how to go about it. Hopefully it will be very successful."

As the games get tougher in the postseason tournament, the Cowboys are hoping Colombo's celebrated nastiness can help. While Free may be more athletic, and graded highly in several games, the 6-8, 318-pound Colombo, and his brawling style, are being welcomed back.

"Doug's played excellently, I think his play speaks for itself," offensive line coach Hudson Houck said. "I think he'll be a starter in this league. He's proven that, he started for a number of games and did extremely well, we're very pleased with what he's doing. We're happy to have Marc back. Marc is a great leader on our offense, and what he brings to our team is hard to measure."

Since Colombo won the starting job in the '06 preseason and left guard Kyle Kosier signed as a free agent the same year, the Cowboys have had relatively few injury troubles along their front five. The same starting unit combined for only two missed starts their first couple of season together.

Kosier missed all but three games in 2008 with foot injuries, though, and the group seemed to suffer from a lack of continuity. They haven't appeared to miss much with Free in the lineup for the entire second half of the season, essentially. A fourth-round pick in 2007, Free gives the Cowboys confidence in their tackle depth, something Jerry Jones said he wasn't sure about before the season.

Right now, though, the Cowboys are happy to have their starter back.

"Dougie's done a good job," Colombo said. "He's got a bright future ahead of him. He's a good young tackle and he's versatile, and I appreciate him coming in and doing his job. . . . We've got a tight offensive line group and if any one of us goes down it's a big deal. They've been very supportive and I'm just excited to get back out there."

Do you watch any other games? How many times do you ever "see" Tom Moore talking with Caldwell, or Moore having ever spent any time with Dungy on the sideline? Ever "see" McDaniels talking to Belichick. I could go on and on with other examples too.

I'm torn on the this, Free has done a very good job. But Columbo was playing fine prior to being injured.

My instincts tell me we should let Free start and work Columbo back in gradually, but there is no doubt Columbo's nasty attitude will be a big help in the playoffs. I just hope his leg is up to the challenge.

This makes me nervous. Hope the guy is all the way back or the move might backfire.

At this point I would think that the coaching staff has the best information and wouldn't do anything that wouldn't give their team the best chance to win the game. I don't think it's loyalty or anything like that, starter or back-up. We now know that Free can play and we have a future starter and solid back-up. I would also think that Colombo's stamina would dictate that Free would spell him some during that game. The only thing that Colombo would have to get used to again would be the speed of the game in live action and the level of speed that the playoffs brings with it. Again, I still would defer to the coaches and I hope Romo doesn't get killed in the process .

Maybe if Colombo was in this past game, there would have been a little retaliation for the cheap shots Romo was taking at the end of the game. Sure we might have been penalized, and I know the one play sealed the shutout, but their linemen were feeling like they could do anything they wanted.

Can anyone tell me if we give Free any help on the Right side during the game? I doubt we give Marc any.
If the Coaches didn't feel Marc was the best player, I doubt he would be starting.

Colombo might be our best OLiner. His return is great. Free played ok. Yeah, he had this great block. And he will get his shot next summer. But he also gave up 3 sacks so far, Colombo had 2. Also, Colombo might bring that boost we need for short yardage situations. I guess the B-gap is easier to run with Davis and Colombo blocking.
Other than that it's a luxury problem. I guess we won't play Colombo on all snaps, so we have a well rested RT throughout the game.

At times they have but I have also seen ample times where Free is matched up one on one

People don't want to make the change because the team has been kicking butt the last few weeks with Free in at RT. However, I think the team would be on a roll if Colombo had been playing too. The teams excellent play isn't a result of Free playing RT... it is because the entire team has been playing great, including defense.

Now Free hasn't messed anything up, and I do think he has a great future for us, but to say his presence has resulted in the Cowboys terrific play, is pure folly.

Colombo is a stronger run blocker and is simply one of the nastiest guys playing in the league. Even in the OP article they mention the mauling attitude that Marc brings to the offense. That is a very good thing to add to a team that is already kicking people's butts. Besides, if Colombo looks like he just can't move well enough to pass block, the coaches will simply put Free in there for the rest of the game.

With Colombo healthy, I can promise you that the Eagles don't want to see that bully inserted on our OL. The entire team is playing like it's hair is on fire. Colombo is going to step in there and help them bloody some teams noses.
