Coincidence?

Only issue I have with the deal is the no franchise/transition tag. But I can't blame them.

I understand what you're saying.
But the fact that Dallas actually signed him to a contract says they were being more aggressive than almost all other teams with any interest.

I guess that's right. Either that or Hardy and Rosenhaus were, in fact, dictating their terms and we were the only ones willing to accept them.

Contrast this to how people were hailing the Melton deal as sheer genius.

If Hardy is suspended for longer than 4-6 weeks or flops, then the FO will he hailed as a genius for doing this contract. Just enjoy this year,,the rest will take care of itself.

Again, I can not overstate how great this deal is.

If he ends up on some 10 game suspension this will cost us like 4-5 million total and we'd have him back for the playoffs.

This deal allows us to shoot for the SB without mortgaging any real future money.

It would have taken a lot of guaranteed money to get this deal done long term.
And if you are Dallas it is real smart business to take these type deals one year at a time where possible.
Like with Melton last year had we given him what it took to sign him long term we'd have had to overpay and then be stuck with a rich non-starter.
If Dallas can't resign Hardy becaus ehe is simply too expensive we likely get 3rd round pick comp in 2017.

We go thru this year and Hardy is solid... say 10 sacks in 10 games but the unthinkable happens and Romo is finished due to injury... Dallas has kept all it's flexibility and could move on to a quick rebuild.

Don't get it confused. People that say Hardy wasn't looking for a long term deal are wrong. Of course he wants one. He just didn't think any team would go there right now to the numbers he wants. So this is why they were focused on just one year. Had the Cowboys given him a competitive multi-year offer with a lot of guaranteed money he'd have signed it quickly.

They chose to be conservative. I think it was a mistake. We shall see.

I think the goal is to seek a deal with Dez this year and if Hardy has a good season, take care of him next year.

This deal is almost a mirror image of Melton's so I think Dallas was the driving force on the contract.
With other teams bailing out Dallas had leverage.
Plus it seems really only Tampa was gonna make a legit offer and Hardy coming in here for a couple days spoke to what team he wanted to join.

Dallas let him get out of the building but not out of town.

Smarter men than I made this deal so I hope it works where Dallas gets the first shot at him next year.

For 6 more sacks, he can earn $1.3 Million more dollars in a year... Oooh, to be a pro-athlete..

Keen observation. We are not likely to keep him beyond this season, but who knows for sure? My crystal ball is in the shop right now.

Or, we could release Dez in 2016 and keep Hardy............just thinking out loud.

Or go through the year as is with both guys.
If we are realistic SB contenders we re-sign both guys because we will have cap resources.
