MOBILE, Ala. – Injured players tend to be out of sight, out of mind during the grind of an NFL season.

Combine his back injury with the fact that he has yet to play a down in the NFL, and it’s understandable if Charles Tapper was an afterthought during the run to the Cowboys’ NFC East title.

Drafted in the fourth round last spring, Tapper was limited throughout training camp and during the early going of the season by a stress fracture in his back, commonly referred to as a Pars Defect. He tried to return to practice in September, but was sent to the injured reserve after a setback.

Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said on numerous occasions that Tapper was a condition to bring back from IR during the playoffs, but the front office ultimately decided against it.

“We had hopes that Charles would be neck and neck with (La’el) Collins as to which one we would bring up for active in our playoff run and that’s what we thought about Tapper,” he said. “But he didn’t get to get as much practices reps as you’d like for a young player like that to get.”

It would be a mistake to depend on Tapper for 2017. Just wait until he goes up against offensive linemen and is in lumbar extension for the majority of the day. I'm not hating, I just don't expect Tapper to have a long, sustainable career.

Unbelievable the amount of defensive linemen we have. Can we get one solid guy to put up double digit sacks ? Or keep doing this committee. Maybe it's time to upgrade the db part....

Just a note...only 6 DE's out of 32 teams reached double digit sacks this past season. The NFL leader was Danielle Hunter of Minnesota with 12.5. Ten linebackers reached the mark, so only 16 total defenders hit ten sacks. It's not really that easy.

Best to evaluate how he's doing not what people think he should be doing. His condition is highly variable in terms of outcomes.

Agreed but we need to look at acquisitions this off season as if tapper and D Law are not on the team

We can't be beholden to constantly injured players next season

Did he have an injury history before we drafted him? Was he another "top talent who fell due to injury problems"????
