Sunday evening saw the second-straight non-padded practice of training camp. The Cowboys once again didn’t compete, offense vs. defense, so we got a bit of a limited look at what this team is working on.

That said, there was plenty to look at as we ease into the grind of the summer, and tomorrow’s padded practice should bring a boatload of new things to talk about.

Some notes:

Read

  • Zack Martin took some reps at center this morning during the walkthrough portion of practice, but not in the afternoon practice. Ronald Leary, who normally lines up at left guard, saw some action on the right side. By working Martin some at center and moving Leary around, it might be their way of making sure Leary could be active on game days by getting their best seven guys up.

As I see it, the three most important qualities in a QB are arm, quick-thinking, and leadership. My sense is that Dak comes out of college looking less impressive on #1, and more impressive on #3. But in the pros #2 is the most indispensable factor. Hope he shows positive signs.

The defensive tackle rotation can be strong provided everyone remains healthy. It's defensive end that's a bit cringe-inducing.

Hope McClain can stay healthy. Would be nice to have a dominant inside game with Thornton, McClain, Crawford, etc. I have real reservations about our LB corp right now so if the DTs can control that interior area, it would make life easier for the LBs.

Hearing that Dak is still not reading defenses and responding accordingly in a fast enough manner is not good. Doesn't mean he will never get it but it doesn't speak well for him displacing Kellen Moore as Romo's backup this season.

Yeah well I'm going to enjoy preseason this year with our backup qbs getting plenty of opportunities. Prescott was ac4th round pick it's going to take time

I too will thoroughly enjoy viewing the preseason games with the other QBs getting most of the reps. Dak is a huge curiosity of mine and I understand his development is a long term project.

The reality that Dak is green right now is obvious to the staff. I'm pretty confident they'll do everything they can to accelerate his reads, although it'll surely take more time for him to shake off the hesitation. Hopefully, once he gets more comfortable with his reads, he won't need to overthink things and his reaction time is gradually bound to improve.

Repetition and familiarity with the system breeds confidence and that means everything. It's just a question of how much he'll improve and if it's enough to start. If nothing else, he might quite possibly become a capable backup. That, in itself, might constitute a valuable step ahead.

I don't listen to Bryan Broaddus when it comes to QB's

He is good on a lot of things ....... but Qb is not one of them.

Wouldn't expect him to be good at reading defenses this year and he was never going to be the backup anyway

You have your opinion and then there is what the Cowboys are telling us is the plan. Dak was drafted to develop and someday be the backup for Romo. Romo and Jerry are saying Romo will play another 5 years in Dallas. Whether you believe that to be true or not is irrelevant, that is the plan. Dak was not drafted to just practice and take up space. The plan for him is to be Romo's back up. Right now he's too green for that job. but to say "he was never going to be the backup" is extremely naïve. He was drafted with purpose... to develop and then backup Tony Romo someday.

I don't think a single person in the country, let alone the front office expected him to be the backup this year. Next year, maybe. But I expect it too take a couple years for him to get there.

He's a rookie. Let it wait for a while
