IRVING, Texas – From a Cowboys-centric point of view, here is the good and bad just a little less than two months away from the start of free agency. First the bad. As we all kn...

Sounds like Spencer isn't progressing very quickly. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing for the Cowboys.

Spencer and Hatcher are just 2 guys on a long list of NFL free agents. There is really no need to focus on them any more than any other free agent. They Cowboys need to be looking at younger free agents.

Oh yes, I forgot. We "can do whatever we want" in free agency.

I agree in general but you may be able to get Spencer on a one year incentive contract. Not sure. My guess is someone will give him a 3-4 year contract with some guaranteed money. All options should be on the table.

If someone gives him a 3-4 year contract with some guaranteed money, that GM should be fired on the spot. That would be crazy.

My guess is that there are other free agents in a similar situation to Spencer. If Spencer is an option then those other players coming off an injury should also be an option, IMO.

Yes, giving ANY guaranteed money to Spencer before he completes training camp would be stupid. It's about 50-50 that his career is over. Recovery from Micro-fracture is unpredictable.

This.

Is Spencer even worth a vet's minimum plus incentives?

Considering he was recently still on crutches should provide the answer.

Yeah, that speaks volumes.

Looking at the financial constraints the team is facing I'm doubtful that he's even worth a vet's minimum.

I wouldn't be surprised. I don't see us as having a lot of money to spend though.

Jerry is already talking about Spencer and Hatcher in past tense. They're gone.

"With our cap situation, that’s pretty much the way we have to go,” Jones said, “and that has nothing to do with the respect we have for Jason Hatcher or Anthony Spencer. They’ve obviously had great careers here in Dallas. We hope they continue to. But at the same time we certainly respect they have to take care of their families and do what’s best for them individually, and we fully expect that to happen.
