Yes, giving ANY guaranteed money to Spencer before he completes training camp would be stupid. It's about 50-50 that his career is over. Recovery from Micro-fracture is unpredictable.

Micro-fracture surgery carries alot of uncertainty and the latest report that his recovery is progressing slowly is even more cause for concern. We don't know what ability he will have after recovery or even if he fully recovers and how prone to future injury he will be. Honestly I don't think he's worth more than the vet's minimum right now and would rather look elsewhere.

You are making too much sense
Don't expect the cowboy decision makers to follow suit

The plan should be

Ware takes pay cut or CYA
Spencer 1 year incentive laden deal with no guaranteed money
Hatcher CYA

Go after young players who are healthy at DL

I would prefer to look at mid-level free agents from other teams that are 28 or younger. If Seattle does not re-sign DT Clifton McDonald before free agency starts, he would be the type that the Cowboys should look at signing. Seattle got bargains last year in Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett because they put themselves into position to sign a bargain if one was available.

Jerry is already talking about Spencer and Hatcher in past tense. They're gone.

"With our cap situation, that’s pretty much the way we have to go,” Jones said, “and that has nothing to do with the respect we have for Jason Hatcher or Anthony Spencer. They’ve obviously had great careers here in Dallas. We hope they continue to. But at the same time we certainly respect they have to take care of their families and do what’s best for them individually, and we fully expect that to happen.

It's a good sign if Jerry is referring to the cap being tight. That's a sign that they are either not going to re-sign them or not going to give them a big offer. Management talking about the cap or budget is often a negotiating ploy or it can be a polite way of saying that they don't want to re-sign the player(s) involved.

I've heard Jon Daniels, the Texas Rangers GM talk about their budget not being big enough to re-sign such-and-such of their own free agent, then a week or two later he signs a free agent from another team to a huge contract.

In the past Jerry would go all in to re-sign a guy like Hatcher regardless of the cap ramifications.

This organization shouldn't spend a penny in free agency.

Draft, Udfa and camp cuts.

a good front office person would have the ability to see the staff will all be gone in a year, the cap can be cleaned up with one or two frugal years.
Cap space and a new staff sounds good to me going into the 2015 draft.

I agree in general but you may be able to get Spencer on a one year incentive contract. Not sure. My guess is someone will give him a 3-4 year contract with some guaranteed money. All options should be on the table.

We don't need a mash unit in 2014

Dallas better decide soon who stays, who goes. Medical risks not needed! Ware better take a significant pay cut or he can hit the road! Hatcher played very well. Can he keep up that level? Spencer medically unfit.

That wouldn't be too smart on his part considering Hatcher wasn't the same after hurting his neck in mid season. He didn't record a sack after he came back. He's 32 and has 8 years of NFL mileage on him. I'd stay away from him. Jerry is probably thinking he's the best we got so I wouldn't be surprised if he resigns him again like he did a few years back on the cheap I might add.

Sounds like Spencer isn't progressing very quickly. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing for the Cowboys.

I'm not surprised. I still remember him being a baby during hard knocks and skipping rehab sessions - to which Wade gave him a slap on the wrist.

On talking cowboys they were saying they hadn't seen him in the building much at all, especially compared to Crawford who seems to be a gym rat.

I'm a little surprised an what is in this article in that we heard back when the surgery happened (and I don't think it was from the Cowboy's brain trust, but from Spencer's camp) that the spot on his knee was small. I'm pretty sure Spencer's agent said that he (Spencer) would be ready to work out in February.

Well I still wouldn't be surprised to see Spencer be offered a vet minimum contract from the Cowboys plus incentives.

What the hell is he talking about?

Stephen Jones was talking about being patient and letting the market set the price for their free agents instead of setting it themselves.

Theirs must be a wait-and-see approach, knowing they can’t be the ones to set market value for either player.

“With our cap situation, that’s pretty much the way we have to go,” Jones said, “and that has nothing to do with the respect we have for Jason Hatcher or Anthony Spencer. They’ve obviously had great careers here in Dallas. We hope they continue to. But at the same time we certainly respect they have to take care of their families and do what’s best for them individually, and we fully expect that to happen.

“But hopefully they can do that and still be a Cowboy. We’ll just have to see. We’ll certainly be watching that. We don’t burn any bridges. I think Darren Woodson and Jay Novacek went into free agency without any contracts and they came home. … We certainly want to be in the mix.”

The team's 2014 salary cap.

He was saying they can't be gung ho about offering extensions to their veteran free agents, they have to sit back and see what the market dictates before deciding whether or not to make an offer.

My guess is that there are other free agents in a similar situation to Spencer. If Spencer is an option then those other players coming off an injury should also be an option, IMO.

Depends on what the doctors say as well as when they say it.

Can someone explain to me why an entire half of our team is absolute trash, yet we're over the cap?

Oh, Jerry?

Well, I'm on your side on this issue. Can you spell cap mismanagement boys and girls?

The situation is, thanks to his genius, we have to massage the cap by June 1st and sign a couple of lower tier free agents so they can pretend they are doing something.
