Some of the thoughts that run through an oversized, bald head:
  • I’ll be writing more about this once training camp starts and really right up until the players vote in the days before the regular-season opener. Seems like campaigns start earlier and earlier nowadays, so I would like to kick off my own for Dez Bryant and Orlando Scandrick to become team captains this season. The four returning captains should be locks in Jason Witten, Travis Frederick, Sean Lee and Dan Bailey, but with Tony Romo retiring and Barry Church signing with Jacksonville, that leaves an offensive and defensive opening.
  • This isn’t about seniority, either, although Scandrick is the longest-tenured defensive player, entering his 10th season, and Dez trails only Witten on offense. Yes, absolutely mind-boggling this will be Bryant’s eighth campaign. This is about so much more, though, as it should be. Serving as a captain of any team is a huge responsibility.
  • Now, Dez and Scandrick have each been known as not exactly the easiest dudes on the team to deal with. Both have matured over the years, and honestly, Scandrick’s me-against-the-world attitude makes him the player he is, which for the majority of the last five years has placed him among the top slot cornerbacks in the league.

I'm all for Dez but shouldn't Dak be the captain?

It's obviously up to the team but if the locker room views him as the franchise QB, you would think he would get a lot of votes.

Scandrick? If he earns it by mentoring these young guys in training camp then I'm all for it.

It's going to be a tough call. I remember Dez being disappointed last year when he wasn't selected/voted captain. Dak checks all of the boxes. And obviously he's the QB....

I agree on Elliott's touches. I can't see them increasing much from last year's. However, I think we need to do a better job of figuring out when to take him out of the game.

I would rather see McFadden sub in for a couple of series at strategic times than to see Elliott taken off the field on third downs. Certainly, at the end of games where we are in command also would be a good time to get Elliott out of the game.

IMO, there were times last year when Elliott did not have enough touches in close games and had more than he needed to in games where we won easily.

The Chicago game, where he got his most carries for the season at 30, was a good example of overusing him. We were leading 31-17 with 6:28 to play, yet left Elliott in to carry the ball five straight times. Then, when we got the ball back with 2:10 left, we handed it to him three straight times. That's eight carries that should have gone to the backup, while I'm sure there were several third downs earlier in the game when it was in doubt where we took one of our top weapons off the field for a lesser back.

We did sub in Morris in the third series of that game when we were up 10-0 (and scored), although I don't know if I would have done that. Instead, I probably would have subbed him in on our second series of the third quarter when we were up 24-0. I might have even brought him in for another series in that quarter, but if not then, certainly in the fourth when we had that 31-17 lead.

I like the direction Dez has been going, but when was the last time he got in trouble for taking plays off?

Captains don't do that, if it's been a few years then I'm fine with it, but I just don't remember.
Besides, why don't we have 2 captains and call it a day.

An astute observation, noshame. There's also a possibility that the title of captain would inspire more consistency than he's ever had.

Of course, there's also the lingering possibility that the injuries Dez has suffered in the past have limited his ability to sustain intensity.

Saying Dez and Oscan should be captains is like saying Joseph Randle and Greg Hardy should have been captains. I think you will see Dak and Jones

I'd be ok with Dez. Scandrick has the seniority and the mentality. I'd like to see enough in camp to make sure he's not likely to lose snaps to younger players over the course of the season before making him captain, though. He's also got a reputation for being tough on young players in his position group, and not necessarily in a good way. I have no idea how true those rumors are, but he'll get a chance to show us for sure this year in camp.

Dez does. Not Scandrick. He's not a good enough player and I'm not picking someone as a captain whose been suspended even once in this league
