Twitter: DE Charles Tapper update

But considering the relative low standard we have,Tapper could possibly come in and instantly be our best pass rusher. How many sacks does he need to take over as our leading sacked? Like 3?

Tyrone Crawford leads with 4.5 sacks. Benson Mayowa has four and Maliek Collins has three.

So, you're right. Tapper could be a big help.

I remember people being excited about what he was showing during training camp.

Hard to say really. He wasn't used by Oklahoma as a pass rusher, so his lack of stats wouldn't stand out when it comes to his draft status. His physical attributes make him appear to be a much better fit at what we would be asking him to do....pin his ears back and get to the QB.

The chance for significant improvement is definitely more possible at DE than it is at OL, when you consider Looney is still the likely game day active since he plays center and then we likely get Cleary as the swing OT unless the Cowboys ever suggest they would put Collins or Martin at RT in the event of an injury there.
If it comes down to it and it will, between Tapper and Collins, I take Collins.

Training camp. Just let that roll around in your head.

So he is going to come off the bench cold and play at a high level? You are getting a fifty percent player, at best. And then you have to consider his talent level to begin with. It is not like say Jaylon Smith suddenly getting healthy.

Everson Griffen and Danielle Hunter say hello
Not sure what Griffen and Hunter have to do with it other than being lower draft choices like Tapper but they have fully developed backbones.

Please share if you have something earth shattering.

Both 3rd and 4th rounders, respectively. Both excellent athletes, both pretty good pass rushers out of the gate. Neither dropped in their drafts for red flag issues like Justin Houston did.

Really just making a point re: impact/upside and draft status with some good physical comps as precedent. I don't personally expect a whole lot from him this year if he were to come off IR, but I disagree with the rationale you used. He does display some good, translatable pass rusher traits and was productive for what he was asked to do in college.

Hmmm I'd already forgotten about Tapper. It would be a welcome surprise if he could contribute.

4.5 is team lead and agree its not a lot. But if Tapper gets even 1 sack I would be surprised. He was not that prolific of a sack artist in college, for a variety of reasons but one of which is that he's a great athlete but plays like a grinder. Not yet a natural pass rusher.

Just curious - but did you go back and edit your response after I responded? I don't remember seeing the bit about being lower draft choices, like I mentioned, and backbones until I responded.

I, too, would probably activate Collins instead for what it's worth.

The same was said about Demarcus Lawrence, and he contributed significantly in the playoffs.

DLaw was not a rook. And he was a much more prolific and natural pass rusher than Tapper. It's not even close. DLaw earned his bones on the field, Tapper was a combine darling.

On one of the episodes of Talkin' Cowboys last week, Mickey Spagnola said Charles Tapper would be starting right now based upon how the rookie looked early in training camp before the back flared up.

We don't have much at DE right now, so I'd like to get Tapper on the field.

La'el Collins is a better player, but the team has never rushed anyone back from that big toe surgery (Sean Lee, Terrell McClain).

The thought is probably a lot better than the reality.

Tapper is not some beastly pass rusher. If he was he would have been drafted much higher.
OU's scheme sucked. Cost this kid millions. He's better than you think and will be worth the wait when he plays.

Beat me to it. :)

No, I've already said to send in La'el if they're both healthy. But I do find Tapper worth keeping an eye on for next season.
