This is why I was against signing Elliott for big money. Guys like Quinn and Jones might be the casualties.
I was getting comfortable with the concept of Jones being let walk but after seeing Awuzie and Brown thus far? Wow, you let Jones go and the CB position is a big need IMO.
They are only "casualties" if the Cowboys view them as such. If they really want to keep them, they will manage a way to do so.
- I can
never recall a time where The Jones have allowed their own UFA's that they
really wanted to keep to walk free into the FA market.
They are the CORE guys that they build their offense ..or defense around , those are the guys that will definitely be the guys they re-sign.
and again this is not a team that is in the red in terms of cap dollar space. in fact they will be one of the teams that are in better amount and flexibility in that area.
- A decision is going to be made on WR Randall Cobb who is on a 1 year contract deal. How much will the team would want to invest in him to re-sign him again.
What is going to be heavily discussed among the team, is the CORE guys vs solid/decent types. and how do they view Byron Jones. Core/elite or solid type ?
If they view him as Demarco Murray solid/productive but not elite – he wont be offered elite status big money, imo.
if Cowboys see Byron as only a 2nd tier CB,.. not a top paid CB,..not elite level, then that's where they gamble in giving him a 2nd tier take it or leave it
offer ..but not top 5 CB contract.
If they do see him as top 5 type , he will paid accordingly as such.
But I frankly do not believe in committing and overpaying for a player because i'm so worried about not covering the bases on the position period. That's panic fire.
and we'll have to see come FA time.
It’s all about how they view a Byron Jones.
And keep in mind, many of us thought Lael Collins was gonna be allowed to walk into FA, before a surprise re-signing long term contract.
