Butch Johnson's diving TD catch in Super Bowl 12 sent me running laps around the backyard as fast as I could run, hollering Touchdown, Touchdown!!

Watching the Cowboy defense dismantle Craig Morton in the rest of the game got me to thinking... The Dallas Cowboys are undoubtedly the greatest football team on earth...

As a kid watching football and paying attention the best I could... I was actually thinking they would go undefeated throughout history once that game was over...

SB 13 grounded me a bit, but I've watched and been a fan feverishly ever since...

I'm a fourth generation Austinite and Texan. I was only about 5 days old when they lost the Superbowl in '76, but I think I was bred to love the Boys!

Growing up, my Dad would wake me up on Saturday's and make sure I watched the Longhorns and on Sunday's to watch the Cowboys. Football was the one thing my father and I can do together or talk about without fighting. He taught me everything he knew about football, yet I grew into a different fan then he is. He'll watch high school, college and pro, while I only watch Longhorn games and all NFL games. He is very calm while watching a game, live or on TV, while I freak out and scream and jump up and down and cry, with either tears of joy or fustration.

While I was born into a mixed household, (Dad a Cowboy fan and Mom an Oiler fan,) because Mom didn't really know about football and Dad did, I followed his lead. But I remember the year that the Boys went 1-15. I was 16 I think, and had already moved out of the house and was on my own, no longer watching football with dad, yet, I continued to watch the Horns and the NFL. One of my best friends loved the Fish, (Dolphins,) and gave me hell all season for being a Cowboy fan. After that season, if I could stay with my team without Dad making sure I watched the game, even though they lost week, after week, after week, after week, I would stay with them forever. It made the Superbowl wins so much more special, because I knew I wasn't a bandwagoner, I was a true Cowboy fan! Kept with them in the bad years and followed thier rise to the top! I'll always be Daddy's Girl, but I bleed Burst Orange on Saturday's for the Texas Longhorns and bleed Silver and Blue on Sundays for America's Team!

Ok guys, I think this would be a good thread!

What was the defining moment you swore loyalty and devotion to the Dallas Cowboys? Were some of you converted from another team? Was it a specific player? Let us hear about it!

For me, it was a funny story.... I was like 4 years old, and I DO remember that my older cousin, Sergio had this NICE AND PRETTY Blue with Silver jacket, with a nice Star on it. That became an obsession, so so bad, that my uncle ended up giving me that jacket. The colors seems right and the star was cool. The rest my friends, is history!

My dad bought me a complete Cowboys uniform for Christmas when I was 2 years old and I still remember it like it was yesterday, but I really got into the team after the NFC Championship loss in 1995.

Well said........Thanks TH, old friend you restored my self-esteem. ;) :)

Nothing wrong with your self esteem for loving the Cowboys and being obsessed with the team. My wife calls herself a football widow come August of each year, but she knows I have my head on straight.

She realizes that a deep love for the Dallas Cowboys has been a part of me for 25 out of 33 years of life. There is nothing wrong with that as it is in the fiber of my being.

Neither the unceremonious pink slip nor the emergency head plate nor the two years in Arizona Dept. of Corrections No. 4982210 dimmed my appreciation or hero worship of the Cowboys.
Many a times, when the bottle was half empty and the car was too crowded with rugrats who I later gave away to 6 families deterred me from being proud and being a fanatic fan.
On days, when the microwave does not mess with the head plate, I offer a toast to our Cowboys. Lift that glass of Soporo beer high into the air.
Long live da 'Boys and the good they stand for!:starspin :starspin :starspin :starspin

For me it started out by being on the wrong end (at the time) of the battle between the very few Romo-sexuals and the Hensonites.

The hammer was brought down on my Henskunk sig....

Everybody hated me for it, but I persisted with my beliefs.

But as a fan, I take pride in that moment, because, my true passion, my true beliefs and desires for my team have come true.

One-look Willie, Skunkboy, Henskunk, whatever you want to call him ... is long gone.

I suffered a disowning as a result of my support for Romo's "intangibles" over Henson's "pedigree".

But I think we can all learn something as fans from this. Theme anyone?

I hope at this point that we're all believers ... and all passionate fans.

It's a good time to be on the banned wagon. Things are looking up.

For once in a long long time it looks as if this team has...'moxie'. :)

The glimmer in Parcells eye is shining bright.

And the writing on the wall reads clear as day.
Is that you Ben? Good to see you again if it is!

That would be me. I joined the wagon in the 90's. But then again, in '92, I was 6. I am not sure how I am expected to rationally decide on a team to cheer for when I am that young....

Well you were young... by deflecting I refre to some of my friends for example.. we were 16 - 18 in the 90s and they were cowboy fans then. Now, they cheer either the patriots or the colts. See what I mean? Those are deflectors that we dont need!

Man, that sounds tough. I have a whole new respect for you, your past, and your appreciation of the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys do provide me with an escape. For 3 hours or so during the game, I channel all of my energy on that 46" LCD TV. My family understands, and my wife and kids simply follow along with me and participate in my "acting a fool" when the Cowboys make a big play or score a TD. My wife and kids actually leave me alone when the Cowboys lose, but cheer along with me when they win.

For a few hours during the game, the Cowboys allow me to escape and act like a kid again. No other sports team, even my LSU Tigers, get me so fired up.

I don't even play fantasy football. I would feel dirty by cheering for other players on other teams...even if those players AREN'T playing against the Cowboys that week.

I married my wife in India in late 1995. I was there on Christmas break and was watching Cowboys games with her when we were on a run to another Super Bowl run. Amazingly, they showed Dallas Cowboys (and only the Dallas Cowboys) in India way back in 1995. What other team has that kind of international recognition? The games come on live in India, but the time zone is 12 hours apart from Dallas, so I was watching the games with her in the early morning hours there. I taught her about the game of football, and explained the history of the Cowboys, and my love for the Cowboys.

She never questioned my desire to stay up all night and watch the Cowboys. She simply said that it is in the fiber of my being.

When I was in the tenth grade, I knew nothing about football, but this gorgeous wide receiver (I'm female) caught a TD pass and did the "wings of victory". Afterwards, he smiled and talked into the camera and I was hooked! That was 1978 and although I had missed Super Bowl XII, the Cowboys were defending champs and I watched my first full Dallas game on Thanksgiving of that year. They were so dominant and had such great personalities. The two weeks leading up to Super Bowl XIII were pure heaven. The Cowboys and their cheerleaders were everywhere in the media and I was drinking it all in. Needless to say, I was devastated when Jackie Smith dropped that TD pass and to this day, I can't stand the Steelers organization. But even in defeat, the Dallas Cowboys had a spark, a swagger that no other team could boast. Ironically, they were named "America's Team" by NFL Films after losing Super Bowl XIII because the film producers realized that this team had more fans than any other. After that, the 80s were successfull recordwise, but we repeatedly missed the Super Bowl. The '90s were an awesome decade for Cowboys fans as we won 3 out of 4. There is now hope once again in Cowboy Land. I am so glad I saw Tony Hill catch that TD pass 28 years ago.
