DeMarco Murray: Hopefully Dez and I both stay with the Cowboys. We've built a great foundation. I think we're heading in the right direction
Is DeMarco prepared to play elsewhere? "Yeah. I understand the business aspect of it. There’s no hard feelings if we can’t reach a deal."
DeMarco Murray on the @dpshow: "I'm thinking about winning a Super Bowl. At the end of the day, the money is irrelevant to some degree."

Man, it's weird for me on DM. There's probably not an attitude I like better on the team. *Maybe* Witten or Romo. The guy just wants to work, and he wants to win. And yet, I don't want to resign him because I think the odds say he's going to diminish and diminish quickly. Even at the $4-4.5M/year level, I'm lukewarm. At the same time, I really really like everything I ever hear out of the guy's mouth. And he walks the walk, too. Throw in the MMA stuff, and you know he's a bonafide badass. I feel guilting hoping the guy moves on.

I think the talent on the team as a whole, namely the defense, would improve if Murray walked.

But there's something to be said for his intangibles in the locker room and that's why I'm undecided if I'd like him back or not.

A few weeks ago I would have preferred we find someone else but I'm leaning toward the latter now.

I'm not on the fence.

We need to move on.

Paying RBs is the worst move you can make in today's NFL. Period. Hard stop.

It will be very interesting to see what his market is once he hits free agency, to be sure.

He may find out that the running back position has become so de-valued that $4 million a year will look much better.

I was all about a deal for Adrian Peterson at a highly-reduced rate, but I see that being less and less of a possibility with each passing day and bit of information I see.

I see the odds of Murray staying growing since the end of the season.

Garrett does not seem to think he will diminish, most of the backs that had those heavy carries happened later in their careers and after previous years of have a lot of carries. I see nothing that leads me to think Murray will all of a sudden fall apart next season.

I'm actually on the move-on side, if I have to pick. Though, at the $4-4.5M level, Murray would appear on the surface to be a steal. What's weird for me is that, even at that level I'd be pretty 'meh' on the resigning. Depsite the fact that I actually really like the player. That probably doesn't make much sense, huh?

You said you'd rather pay Adrian Peterson. Which is it?

It doesn't have to be black or white.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I read it all, too. I do think that market for second contracts on RBs is going to be very soft, too. They're just too easy to replace with middle-round picks.

Yep. I think Garrett really likes what Demarco gives him in terms of being able to stay on the field in all situations. He's also generally a really good RB on passing downs. Plus, I think the guy probably does have an attitude that you want on your team with all the MMA tough-guy stuff.

I expect if we sign him, we'll see significantly fewer rushing yards on somewhat fewer carries next season, but that he'll still be capable in the passing game, which is what I really care most about. I can live with that. I just think I'd rather see a 3rd rounder come in who can perform those functions adequately and save the $3.5M to add another impact player or two on defense, which you're not really going to do this offseason with a mid round pick in the draft.

This is simple.

For a reasonable number, he'll be here. If someone wants to offer crazy money, he's gone.

I'm OK either way. He's not as replaceable as some think, and he's not as irreplaceable as others think.

I want him here.....but only for the right number. I want to see money for a key defensive acquisition, too.

Yeah. It's amazing how the position has gone from one of the NFL's glamourous, highly-paid roles, to a young man's game and a 'meat grinder' position where you're essentially used up and spit out.

Today's NFL is a far cry from the Emmitt Smith - Barry Sanders - Thurman Thomas days of the '90's.

Not sure why people thought Peterson would A) get released and B) waltz in here and want to play for a reduced rate. Just not going to happen. He will want more money than Murray and I don't want to pay Murray more than $4M per.

Yeah, it's not black/white. I'd pay Peterson, too. But I think Peterson is a try special player, whereas I think Murray just very good at most of what he does.

But offensive players who change how you game plan a team are another matter. They don't come available often, and if you can add them without mortgaging your cap, you should find a way to do it. Dez is in this category for me, too, where I'd pay him more than I'd pay an ordinary top receiver.
