5 minutes ago he was a piece of trash we needed to trade and now he’s back to being a true war daddy

It's amazing how that works. 10 minutes ago Taco was ready to step up and you know basically be a sufficient replacement.

Care to elaborate? Don't think we overpaid by the standards set by others.

Comparing to other bad contracts doesn't make this one a good one. First contract post rookie contract tends to be overpriced across the league. Staff have a short shelf life, and are looking to mortgage the team's future to keep their jobs now.

If you want to compare, compare to production of other players, rich or poor.

Last 14 games, Gregory beat Lawrence by one QB hit, tied him on sacks at 5. Is he worth 20mil/year too? Last couple of seasons, Lawrence has faded after the first 4 games.

In 2016 he did *nothing*. 1 sack. I'm not saying that's indicative of his talent. He played injured. But it probably was indicative of how the rest of the league considered him. So he comes in 2017, everyone assumes he's a bum, and he blows up in increasing fashion over the first 3 games.

Take out those 3 games before teams caught on that he wasn't a bum, and he has 18.5 sacks over his last 31 games. Good but not great. He has a contract for great. He's going to underperform.

And if his injury history catches up with him, he's going to underperform by a lot.

that is patently false and you should never repeat it

Romo's entire career was one of the most team friendly QB deals this side of Foxborough

The contract wasn't bad in itself, but it might have been a better option to trade him, even not just in hindsight because of the 2 injured years we ate.

He had a weird contract with 2(?) final years that voided *if* he was still on the Cowboys. It was oddly *inviting* us to trade him to get the value out of those contract years. We could have. It was a thought. We miss out on 2014, but save a ton of cap, and probably get lots of trade value out of him.

Im not really up on how these contracts work but ive always wondered why dont teams give them more money in year 1 and then less money in the following years. Since we have a good bit of cap this year why not give him most of his money this year so next year his cap would be alot less for zak/zeke contracts?

You can always roll money over to the next year. You can never get it back once you've paid it to a player.
