That being said, VACowboy, I doubt most people would meet someone who fights dogs and think them the kind of person to do so. Unless it is an obvious meanhearted down south Bubba, there is a large sample of people who have no qualms about this event.

If anything, dogfighting wasn't even on the national pulse of happenings UNTIL Vick. In a sad way, this Vick case might be the best thing to happen to dogs everywhere, because now the public is quite more informed about the happenings of such an event.

And regarding player's comments - someone stated that they are simply giving a political answer. I quite disagree. Although the crimes Vick is accused of are completely heinous, he has now become a charicature of the dog fighting community. Michael Vick is no longer (was he ever) a human being with a complex emotional and mental makeup, who does different things everyday, some good and some bad. He is now a vile uber villain who spends his days breeding, fighting and mutilating defenseless dogs. He will never escape this stigma in the public eye, and will always be a morally reprehensible person to many people.

I am not proclaiming that he isn't such a person, but I will say that I have done things in my life that I consider morally heinous, but I don't consider myself a bad person. As a Kantian by choice, I can't help but agree with the 'political' sentiments Vicks' colleagues. I can't judge a man based on media reports.

That was me that said the players are giving nothing but political bs answers...

And, in your bolded part you just described what Vick is, yet you think some players are going to come out in the press and say those things? Yeah right! Aside from Portis and maybe a few others so far, all of them are avoiding saying anything other than political bs answers.

I would like to REALLY know what they think about that behind closed doors! Our punter has two or three dogs that he talks walking in parks around Dallas...you think he's going to actually come out and say what's on his mind? Huh....

Uhm, which was kind of my point. As I said, I'm sure all the people who think Vick is a "nice guy" would never have believed he'd been involved in hanging, drowning, beating, electrocuting and otherwise torturing/slaughtering man's best friend.

..snip..

All humans are complex emotional creatures who do some good things and ssome bad things, but not nearly all of us engage in anything as vile and reprehinsible as Michael Vick allegedly has. He has been accused of crimes against animals which have demonstrated empirically to escalate into future crimes against society. He has been placed at dog fights and fingered as a participant in dog hangings and dog drownings by more than one person. Witnesses say he bankrolled the whole thing, an operation that's been doing its business since 2002. Michael Vick didn't steal a piece of gum or take a leak on the hood of someone's car. What he has been engaged in wasn't a one-time woopsie. It was willful, aggregious, felonious behavior that has taken place over a course of many years. A person who engages in that type of behavior isn't a "nice guy" in my book and deserves whatever loathesome opinion society has of him.

..snippage..

I can't judge a man based on media reports.

I can't either, but I can judge him based on federal indictments and eyewitness accounts.

It seems hard for a lot of NFL players to understand why Vick is in so much trouble. You hear some say he was a great guy and has a lot of talent as if somehow that excuses what the indictment alleges he's done. I think it shows how out of touch some athletes are from the reality of the world which most of us live in. Too often athletes get judged/treated by a very different standard then the rest of us which allows them to avoid punishment. When reality hits them in the face, some struggle to understood/accept what Vick has been charged with. Of course too many haven't bothered to read the indictment for whatever reason before they open their minds.

Understand the Commish is making the rounds talking to all the NFL teams. Sure would be nice to hear what he has to say if the subject of Vick comes up while discussing the new disciplinary code. If Vick is smart, he accepts any plea bargain the Feds willing offer him. It's one thing to admit in court everything he has done re dogfighting, gambling, etc. It is something else for all those witnesses to testify against him and for the prosecutor to show videos (which they allegedly have) of Vick himself actually killing dog(s) & paying off his gambling debts incurred as a result of these dogfights. You can only imagine the revulsion which would be generated by all the blood, etc.

I remember when Marge Schott said Hitler was a good guy in the beginning. :banghead:

I think Vick was just trying to give his dogs a bath...accidental drownings happen all the time...

A bad bathing experience as a child?

Don't you love it? The old, "He just got caught up in a bad situation" argument.

You get "caught up" in traffic. You don't get caught up in hanging, drowning, and electrocuting dogs.

who you are is defined by what you do. what other defining method can you use to determine what type of person someone is? Vick didn't just make one mistake and then try and learn from it. He had a repeated pattern of abusing animals and breaking the law for money and entertainment. The dude needs to be punished for what he did and the damage he caused his team, his teammates and the league.
