Near the end of the 2023 NFL Draft, Deuce Vaughn became the darling of the draft. The video of Vaughn being drafted in the sixth round by the Dallas Cowboys quickly went viral. His own father, Chris Vaughn, the Cowboys' assistant director of scouting, made the call to tell him that he had been drafted.

You couldn't watch that video with a dry eye unless you were completely soulless.

Off To A Good Start

Over the first five weeks of the season, Vaughn had a role in the offense.

It wasn't a major role, but he was getting playing time.

Over those five games, Vaughn had 20 carries for 40 yards to go along with five receptions for 19 yards on five targets. He had one 10-yard punt return too.

In total, he had 48 snaps on offense and another 19 on special teams.

Again, he wasn't on track for MVP with those numbers. However, at least he was playing.

As things stand right now, Elliott, Dowdle, and Freeman are likely locks to make the final roster.

Based on recent comments by both Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy, it seems likely that Hunter Luepke will make it as a fullback.

Last year, the Cowboys carried three running backs and Luepke at fullback. That doesn't bode well for Vaughn. Nor Conner, Davis, and Peat for that matter.

Nor does it help that Royce Freeman is reportedly having an impressive camp.

Then add that cutting Vaughn wouldn't be all that costly to the Cowboys' salary cap. Under that set of circumstances, it seems Vaughn has dark clouds looming overhead.

It's all about preseason for RBs. Practice shows nothing when they aren't tackling. Zeke, Royce, and Luepke have similar styles. Royce would make a good practice squad guy in case Zeke got hurt.

RB room was the one area where we really decided to give up this offseason. It will hurt us no doubt when Dak will be made to throw the ball 40 plus times a game which gives us a 8-16 record historically through out his career. This is not his fault (can't believe I am saying this) when you become a one dimensional team bad things happen as we all know.... we need a solid run game.

Truth.

Good stuff.

I never understood that pick anyways.

He’s too little.

No one said this last season when Tony was limping around on one leg.

But now that Zeke is back, we suddenly need to draft a RB.

What happened to “you don’t need a RB…they are cheap.”….

It’s because Zeke is better than Tony.

Always was.

The running backs should be Dowdle, Davis, Freeman and Leupke...why Elliot is on this team is beyond ridiculous....

As far as Deuce goes, it's a nice feel good story being drafted by the team his Father works for but, he's just too short and undersized to play in the NFL....

It's just amazing (well, expected but that's for another thread) that the Cowboys couldn't find ANYBODY that was a better draft pick than Vaughan.

I'm sure this year we'll see some 6-7th round draft picks or undrafted free agents in a position of need for Dallas that play at a high level. What happened to our vaunted great draft department?

Deuce Vaughn has not been utilized properly since he was drafted. He is a running back who should be utilized situationally in space and primarily in passing situations. Dump-off passes in the flats. Intermediate passes behind linebackers.

You play to his weaknesses pounding him between the tackles. Sweep. Off-tackle runs. These options play to his strengths.

Perhaps the clock is ticking for Vaughn as a Cowboy. His NFL life is more uncertain at this point. As such, I will add Inside The Star's Richard Paolinelli to the growing list (i.e. Bob Sturm, Nick Wright, etc.) of sports media representatives making dead certain predictions. Time shall always tell if 'professional' prognosticators are any more right or more than the average person or fan.

Meh.

Deuce is definitely quicker and faster than Freeman. Zeke is better than Freeman. Even Rico Dowdle might arguatively be better than Freeman. Zeke, Rico and Freeman bring you the same type of RB. Keep 1 of those 3 on the practice squad. Keep Deuce on the 53 if you're going to use him both in the return game and on designed run plays and pass plays. If you can't get creative as an O-Coordinator with this revamped and younger Oline, maybe that's where the problem lies.
