but again your discounting everything he did to get here, his credentials even in the NFL so far are better than the 2 guys you have ahead of him..at every level.. thats what I'm saying.
Everything he did to get here earned him a 6th round draft selection. He’s done absolutely nothing in the NFL so far and is currently behind Davis and Dowdle. I really don’t understand why you want to keep going with this. We’ll find out next week if he made up any ground on either one of those backs.

So after one preseason game against a bunch of third stringers, you’ve already summed up his career in the NFL as a success? It’s going to be interesting to see what some of you who’ve already anointed him as a success, have to say next week if he doesn’t play very well and happens to put the ball on the ground.
Yes, I have but not based on one meaningless preseason game but based on his entire career. He’s been proving everyone wrong since he laced up the pads. Dudes built like a mini tank with quickness not seen often.

If you want to anoint him as already being a great NFL player based on his college career, go ahead.

Eric Scott, Vaughn, Mukuamu, Donovan Wilson, Cedric Wilson, Xavier Woods, Anthony Brown.....starting to turn into a nice little round for them. Donovan, Woods and Brown were starters and Wilson was a starter for us at times and got a nice deal because of it. I'm convinced Mukuamu is ready to be unleashed. Just waiting for a spot to open up for him.
They draft well and they are able to scoop up undrafted players as well, see Stephens. Their plan is working. Now they just need to find a backup olineman from somewhere.

I never said he was going to be great. Just said he will have success if used properly. Please don’t try and change my words. It makes further conversation troublesome.

The way you keep anointing him, you certainly sound like you think he’s going to be great, if not already.

I asked if you already have summed up his NFL career as a success, and you said yes. He’s yet to take one snap in a regular season NFL game and you’ve already anointed him. Go face palm that. Lol

I don’t think that’s how this works man. MM has roles for RBs, not a standard order. All 3 backs are different. Pollard is the all-around, Rico will be the heavy back, and Deuce will be the gadget back. You’d use them in different circumstances. Special is special no matter what size it comes in, and Deuce is special. What were Malik’s ypc again? 0.8…..And Rico? 3.5.

Deuce was 6.3 despite a free rusher knocking him for a 5 yd loss which he couldn’t do a thing about.
They've told the media they do not see him as a gadget back.

I’m sure they have more of a role for him than that, but they’ll likely come up with a gadget play or two for him. Anything that might get the defense going one way and him going another. That could create a house call real quick.

Call me on what? How many 5’5” RBs have flourished in the NFL? Can you provide a list of those? Everyone keeps bringing up what he did in college. He was a sixth round pick for a reason and he was our second sixth round pick. We’ll see how it plays out for him this season, but it’s silly continuing to argue about it.
They’re not asking him to flourish. Right now they just need him to be a reliable third down back. I think he’ll do just that. I don’t think height should be a point of emphasis on a running back. We all know about Darren Sproles, but even Barry Sanders was only 5’8. Maurice Jones-Drew was 5’7. It’s not a metric of a great running back. It’s certainly not the thing that is going to make you flourish or not.

They’re not about to use him as a third down back, unless it’s a third and long and they want to get him out in the flat. He definitely won’t be reliable as a third down back at his size. Even Pollard has had some issues on third down over his career. You need someone with some size who can lower their head and push defenders back.

If he were 5'8 instead of 5'5 people would be comparing him to Barry Sanders (5'8), but because he is so short people compare him to Darren Sproles (5'6). I'm not saying he is on the same level as Barry, but Vaughn's short area quickness I haven't seen in years in the NFL. I think he is better than Pollard right now, but that doesn't mean that he should start over Pollard, I think everything needs to be earned. I do worry about how small he is, but watching his college tape and this last pre-season game you can tell he is special. I also understand why people have questions because he will not wear defenses down ala Emmitt Smith, Zeke. One of the issues that Barry ran into is that he was not as durable as Emmitt, and he would get stopped in the back field often because he was more finesse than a pure downhill runner.

I also hate bringing up Barry after the first pre-season game, but when I was watching Vaughn I immediately felt that anytime he touched the ball anything could happen and I remember having that feeling when watching Barry Sanders. Like I said it's just a feeling not a complete evaluation. I would hold off on any evaluation until after the season then figure out where everything stands.

But if I were pressed today, Pollard would still be the starter, but obviously Vaughn would be getting a ton of looks throughout the season, because if he is what I think he is, I think that he will transform this team.
I get the Barry Sanders comparison because the ability to be running full speed and juke someone at full speed is a rare trait that he has like Barry had.

He was a sixth round pick, so his credentials obviously didn’t matter to anyone. Let me be absolutely clear with you. I’m not saying he’s not going to be a good player. I haven’t once said he’s not a good player. I’ve never said that he doesn’t have a lot of talent. The “only” concern I have with him is his size. That’s it! The only thing I’ve said where there’s going to be a right and a wrong, is that he won’t be one of our top two backs “entering” the regular season. If he is then I’ll be wrong.
Why are you concerned with his size?

Is that a serious question? Durability would be one reason and his ability to break tackles and push defenders back. Blocking would be another concern for a player of his size. Like I keep saying if there weren’t any concerns about his size, he wouldn’t have been a late round pick.
