Smith's only problem has been health. IF he is healthy and we don't take a WR high, I would expect him to be right in the mix for the #3 WR spot or a 4th WR spot in 4 WR sets.

He’s not a slot WR. And being healthy is a huge part of earning your spot as a WR3. Especially if you’re not a rookie top-100 pick. He’s a veteran retread. The league is full of those guys on their 3rd and 4th teams.

They guy has all the talent in the world. You get your best receivers out there. The kid can take the top off. Just needs to be healthy. He can score from anywhere. Slot, outside, reverse, over the middle whatever.

Retread? LOL The kid has been injured his entire time in the NFL. He has had ONE other team.

I already posted why he didn't play after that. Its because he had a knee issue again.

Gallup caught 7 total passes in his first 6 games. So I guess that was a easy judge too right? Got his opportunity and blew it?

From what I can find, he didn't have a knee issue until late December. In fact, there are articles out there about him being a healthy scratch during other weeks.

You're trying to push that he's the "new slot wr" based off one game (really one catch), then getting indignant when others point out that when he was given a bigger role he didn't do anything with it. That's the observational truth. Will he prove that it was lack of opportunities rather than lack of ability? Who knows.

He can be the 3rd or 4th WR on this team. I would use him all over the formation.

He reinjured his knee. That is a fact.

LOL...........51 yard bomb the first chance he got is doing nothing eh?

So tell me, what offensive players went off against the Saints?

All you are doing is making assumptions. Anyone would be happy to have this kid on the roster with this kind of talent. All he needs is health and an opportunity. 2 games starting is not a legitimate opportunity.

That Saints game was the last time Devin Smith would even be active in 2019. Tavon Austin eventually took over as the 4th receiver while Smith also started battling a knee injury.

Nice article on bloggingtheboys that just came out today about Devin Smith and his potential.

Actually very satisfying that I post my thread, guys like you discount it, and the very next day an article comes out that backs up my opinion.

When you dig into a position, you see what you want to see when someone disagrees with you.

He reinjured the knee late in the season. That's a fact.

He was a healthy scratch for most games. That's a fact.

No one has said a 51-yard bomb on his first catch is doing nothing. That's a fact.

Most of the assumptions being made in this thread are by you. The rest of us are taking a wait-and-see approach with Smith and not counting on him BECAUSE there's not enough evidence to say he can be counted on. There are less than a handful of nice plays to go on.

Why would Smith be playing for any reason other than injury? Last year was the first year he was mildly healthy after 2 years of major knee injuries. Sign the kid, let his knee have another year to heal and then see what he can do this year. And obviously his knee wasnt quite ready because he had problems with it. THAT IS A FACT.

But whatever, deny and put the kid down all you want. It will make it that much sweeter if he surprises. However much of a long shot that will be for him to stay healthy.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Early promise fades
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith finished the 2019 season having caught five of nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown through four games.

The former Jet hadn't played in an NFL game since 2016, but after a strong showing in training camp and the preseason, Smith began the year on the 53-man roster and showed flashes of his promise as a deep threat by hauling in his second career TD in Week 2. By Week 5, however, he was inactive and didn't see another snap the rest of the season. With both Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb free agents this offseason, there could be openings on the depth chart ahead of him heading into 2020, but Smith would still be a longshot to have significant fantasy value.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Back at full speed
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (knee) was credited with a full practice Wednesday, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Smith's status is merely an estimation as the Cowboys would not practice until later Wednesday afternoon. While the 27-year-old has recovered from his injury, he is still unlikely to be active Week 17.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Dealing with knee injury
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith picked up a knee injury and is questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

Smith was added to the injury report Thursday as a limited participant and his availability for Sunday remains up in the air. The 27-year-old hasn't seen game action since Week 4, so there's a good chance he'll be inactive regardless of his injury status this weekend.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Another DNP in Week 7
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's contest against the Eagles, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Smith got a chance early in the season when Michael Gallup was sidelined. That said, Gallup is available Sunday for a third straight game, ensuring Smith is a part of the inactive list. This may be Smith's reality without an absence from Gallup.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Healthy scratch against former team
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Jets, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

This is the second straight game that Smith will be a healthy scratch, despite Randall Cobb (back) being inactive for this contest. The Cowboys' wideout corps will continue to be led by Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup while Tavon Austin is expected to slot in as the No. 3 option.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Logging first DNP of 2019
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Packers, Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News reports.

After getting heavy usage during Michael Gallup's (knee) two-game absence, Smith will don street clothes for the first time this season. The decision likely stems from hauling in just two of six targets during that stretch.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Continues slide
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith was unable to haul in his lone target during Sunday's 12-10 loss to the Saints.

After going for 74 yards and a score in Week 2, Smith has slid down over the past two weeks, culminating in Sunday's disappointing performance. Smith is obviously not an integral part of Dallas' offense, but it's worth mentioning that -- despite just five catches in three games -- he's averaging a whopping 22.6 yards per reception. He certainly provides a big-play threat in the Dallas offense, but that will be hard to tap into in Week 5 against a Green Bay team adept at keeping opposing passing games in front of them with just 10.9 yards per opponent reception, 12th best in the league.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Quiet in win over Miami
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith caught two of five targets for 39 yards in Sunday's win over the Dolphins.

Getting the start in place of Michael Gallup (knee), Smith finished second on the Cowboys in targets and came within inches of a much more impressive performance, as Dak Prescott just overthrew him in the corner of the end zone on the team's opening drive. Gallup's timetable for a recovery isn't yet clear, but Smith should see an expanded role at least through Week 4's contest against the Saints.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Could benefit from Gallup's absence
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith could see his snap count increase in the Cowboys' upcoming game Sunday against the Dolphins with starting receiver Michael Gallup (knee) expected to be sidelined for at least 2-to-4 weeks, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

Smith already benefited from Gallup's early departure due to the meniscus injury in Sunday's 31-21 win over the Commanders, playing 18 of the Cowboys' 70 offensive snaps and finishing with three receptions for 74 yards and a score on three targets. As he showed on his 51-yard touchdown jaunt, Smith offers his most utility as a deep-ball threat, so he won't necessarily absorb all of Gallup's work in the intermediate area. That said, the presence of one fewer receiver should prove beneficial to Smith and other tertiary options in the passing game like Tavon Austin (concussion) and running back Tony Pollard.

Cowboys' Devin Smith: Catches long touchdown pass
by RotoWire Staff | RotoWire

Smith caught all three of his targets for 74 yards and a touchdown during Sunday's 31-21 win over Washington.

Smith helped his team climb out of an early hole when he hauled in a 51-yard touchdown pass to complete a 97-yard scoring drive in the first quarter. Despite not catching a pass last week, the long score helped Smith lead a talented receiving corps in yardage for the day. While his deep-threat role should lead to volatile production patterns this season, his ability to get behind defenses could add yet another dimension to an already potent offense.

I don't think any of us can answer that. There's no evidence he was injured when he was not activated for games other than in late December. Could he have been? Sure. It's possible he was deactivated because he was at least the fourth receiver and Dallas had other players who were more valuable on special teams. It's possible he just wasn't showing enough in practice to be kept on the active roster ahead of players like Cedrick Wilson and Ventell Bryant, but again, they had specialty roles.

You seem to be unable to consider any possibilities other than your own.

Did you look at the date? Dec. 20. We had two games left. He had been deactivated the previous 10, all the way back to Oct. 6. There are multiple blurbs that show that he was simply a healthy scratch for at least several of those games.

Its actually pretty obvious why he wasnt playing. The FO saw him as an outside receiver behind either Gallup or Cooper. When Gallup was injured, he got in there. When Gallup came back he wasnt. Pretty simply stuff.

I see a guy with loads of talent that can really be a weapon. But if all they are going to do is have him play behind Cooper or Gallup he probably won't play much. I would move the kid around. Teach him the slot and have him in all the 4 WR packages.

But again, he has to stay healthy.

But no, I wont even consider the notion that he got his chance for two games, blew it, and proved he couldnt play. LOL

That is some kind of nonsense that a hater would make up.

What it showed was that he did hurt his knee again like I said. As far as being a healthy scratch for a few games, sure that makes sense.

So is your analysis that he didnt play because he blew his chance?

I would think it much more likely that he was the backup to one of the outside guys.

I bet your the same guy who says "But garret holds players back..."

But now SUDDENLY.....It's the player. Really dude?

Smith has numbers and pedigree. Check out Ohio State highlights...unless you're a hater then don;t bother. Granted...some injury bug. But to sit here and tell us it's all HIM and not the former regime....well excusing other players for it? No sir..not buying it.

It’s almost creepy how closely you nailed me.
Smith is a dime-a-dozen NFL retread on his 2nd team who last year lost his WR4 job to another high-promise college player/NFL journeyman in Tavon Austin. He’s at an age and cost where he’s got a better chance of being off the roster than he does of being handed the WR3 role for a player who isn’t a slot WR.

I’m ok with you not buying it, but that’s the reality.
