After Romo is gone you have a really good team in place for the next QB to step in. I love Romo as much as anyone, but I love the Cowboys more. The better shape the entire roster is in, both talent wise and resource wise the better. Being competitive now and being setup well for the future are not mutually exclusive.
What happens if the Cowboys go all in and Romo gets hurt, or the team doesn’t win a SB in the next 2-3 years? Well then you're in a bad spot cap wise, you risk losing players to FA because you can't afford to keep them, and your searching for your next QB on a roster thats losing talent and having to have a rookie carry the load. Slow and steady is fine by me. If Romo can't get one, so be it, but I'd rather have a competitive roster year in and year out than an occasional flash in the pan roster.
Right. And I would say most people would agree that this approach, is the best way to move forward. It makes a whole lot of sense. And I love the culture change.
But here is how I add it all up:
Its been two decades since the Cowboys made a SB appearance. 2 decades.
You have Tony Romo in his last 2-3 year run. Romo who would be an instant HOF candidate, if he had a ring. Not to mention the Great Jason Witten. These guys have a very short window. The time is now for them. Two of the most beloved players in Dallas Cowboys history.
Look at the QB situation in this league. Erod had a really good thread about it. Good QBs have become extremely rare. Who knows how long its going to take to find that next QB. I know some think we can win with just a "good enough" QB, but I don't subscribe to that train of thought. Yeah, you can do it with an average QB, but most SB teams have a decent, if not Great QB. We may have a tough team, but without a QB we wont do much. Who knows how long it will take to "find one"
We have a great QB.......right now! Were paying him gobs and gobs of money.
So the ideal thing would be to win a SB now, and still be competitive after Romo is gone...
The right answer , for me, is the one that gets us a SB. If we have a good team for years and years and don't get to a SB with or without Romo, then the approach and plan that makes sense, wasn't the right plan.
We need to prove that this franchise can get to a Super Bowl again. Us older guys live off the past. And that past success has become ancient history. Success in the NFL is measured by one thing, by the vast majority of media and fans. Have you won a Super Bowl? It will be great to push for the playoffs year in and year out, but do we win a SB? What is the best chance for this organization to win a SB? With or without Romo?
