After our loss last week there was a lot of shade thrown at Dez. Including by me saying that he needs to take it up a notch, and when he's the best player on the field, he needs to play like it. We've discussed Garrett's inability to scheme him open, we've discussed Dez being taken out of games too frequently, and even discussed Dez not being the same receiver as before his injury, and possibly even turning into the next Hakeem Nicks.

Let's stop it. Right now. The dude has the competitive fire of Michael Irvin, the physical leaping ability and ability to high point a second to no receiver in the league, and a solid offense around him.

We need him to come up big this year, and he will. Week 1 will hands down be his worst game of the year, and I don't think we see another game this year where he has less than 4 catches.

He will come to play, and lead this offense this year. He's our best player, and will play like it.

Maybe. Maybe not.

He has lots of strengths. Ability to catch contested balls being the primary one. Excellent hands, for the most part. Competitive fire you mention.
But he has weaknesses. Difficulty getting separation. Poor and limited route runner. Average at best speed.

Coaches need to find a way to get him the ball despite the weaknesses. Play to his strengths. If they can do that, Dez will have a good year. If not, he in for a long, frustrating year. The coaches certainly didn't help him in game 1. We'll see what happens in game 2.

Average at best speed? Disagree completely. While he's not a burner, he has above average speed IMO. I also think his route running is much better than many suggest in here. He doesn't have the feet of a OBJ or Ocho Cinco, but he can get out of his breaks relatively well. He runs a good comeback, and and decent dig route. Not that hard to run a go route and a post. And his slant routes are always on point because of his physicality and ability to beat the jam at the line.

He disappears quite often. Disappeared all of last year as a matter of fact. And I dont think its all his fault either. I blame Garrett.

But hey, we are 0-1 and in large part to the fact that Dez wasnt used properly. And you keep hearing the same stupid things out of Garrett that we always do. He obviously isnt going to change what he does.

He disappeared last year due to injury and an awful QB situation. We're going to be a run first team. Dez needs to take advantage of his opportunities when he gets them down the field, like catching that should've been TD in the corner. The other one was a poor through, and yes I agree he wasn't done any favors by the coaching staff, but I'm not worried about him or our offense moving forward. We had a rookie QB in his first game.

I would wager that at least half of the receivers in the league is faster than him. That makes his speed average.
The fact that almost every throw to him is contested tells me 2 things: average speed and limited ability to get separation. He's great at catching contested balls. Probably the best in the league. But that doesn't mean his weaknesses don't exist.

As for his route running, there is lots of articles out there where this is talked about.

Dez needs to be moved around. He needs to go in motion pre-snap. He needs to line up to the left, to the right, in the slot. All over the place. He needs to run every single route. Slants, crossing patterns, digs, drags. The DB needs to be kept guessing what he's going to do next because if he's only running 2 or 3 routes, it's too easy for the DB's.

It will be tough with Dak in there because he is still learning to play his position. Dez's only success in his entire career has been with Romo as his QB. This must change because Romo's days as a QB are winding down.

He needs to be more than a highwire / back shoulder throw target.

Considering Dez missed the off season in 2015, then hardly played last year. He is still getting acclimated back into a routine. It should not be a total excuse. But it can be part of it. 1st game action being 100%. He will be fine.
He just needs to hang onto those passes going to the ground.

Did these "weaknesses" exist as he was routinely talked about as arguably the best receiver in the league?

Yes?

Guess we're good here

1 - Garrett Sucks, that's clear
2- No Tony Romo means no Dez, His last 8 without Tony Romo:
1, 8 yds
4, 50 yds, TD
1, 9 yds
3, 62 yds
5, 45 yds
5, 104 yds, TD
2, 12 yds
2, 15 yds, TD.

3 - Number 2 is a product of number 1

Dallas better move him to the other side of the field. Because JN will shut him down. We cant go 2 straight weeks allowing the opponent take him out of the game.

Dez will really be just fine if Romo comes back healthy. That's the only QB that seems to trust him.

Week 1 was the worst game of his career. It can only get better, right?

He will be fine if u use his strengths which is fighting for the ball and back shoulder throws. These basic routes is setting Dez up to fail and the team to fail.

Romo was the one who would change the play to put Dez where he could make a huge play.

Dez looked fantastic in the preseason. Are we forgetting that?

Dez had 5 targets from a rookie receiver who had some accuracy issues. Should he have come down with the TD? Sure. But the reason Dez is always involved in these did he or didn't he catch the ball situations is because he's being thrown low probability throws all the time. The fact that he comes down with a lot of them and the other ones are close is a testament to his ability. Not a knock.

Brandon Marshall doesn't 'get open' anymore than Dez does. But he's routinely targeted in the intermediate to shallow deep part of the field and is contantly moving the chains and causing problems for the other team. Dez is a better player than Marshall. This team needs ot act like it.

Now i'm all for taking what a defense gives me. That isn't a passive thing. That is actively exploiting a teammates weakness. Beasely and Witten need to make plays to keep the other team honest. Dez needs to continue to make the impossible seem probable. Dak needs to feed his WR more. The coaches need to get Dez involved early. Zeke needs to be better. The line needs to be better.

Given everything that happened Sunday....this fixation on Dez...is weird and counter-intuitive.
