Did Not Realize How Putrid The Texans Really Were

Skins fans should be worried about a coupla things from that game, as they're celebrating racking up mega yardage on the Toxins:

1) One sack of David Carr... the Toxins' offensive line is just putrid... Carr put up a 95.2 rating on the Skins, and the Toxins averaged 5.4 yards per play...

This defense is simply not as good as last year's was, and not NEARLY as good as the defense was two years ago... I know that missing Shawn Springs hurts them, but Archuleta is every bit the liability in coverage we knew he was gonna be, and even when Springs returns, Mike Rumph is still gonna get his playing time, and Carlos Rogers seems to be going through a sophomore slump...

For you Skins fans out there, Terence Newman went through a similar slump and bounced back nicely, so it might be too early to hit the panic button... I think he's better suited to be the 2nd CB anyway, where he doesn't have to be the "target" for opposing offenses, so if Springs can get back on the field (and play effectively when he does), Rogers shouldn't struggle quite so badly...

Even so, the pass rush is all but nonexistent, and the coverage isn't very good right now... certainly, they had NO answer for Andre Johnson, and I'd have to assume that Gregg Williams put a special focus on AJ... can't really testify to the run D off of this game, since the Toxins only ran the ball 18 times... Ron Dayne did have some limited success inside on them, though, and of course we remember that Julius Jones and Marion Barber ran effectively on them the week before...

2) No sacks yet this season by supposed pass-rushing stud Andre Carter... and this time, he was going up against the immortal Ephraim Salaam (who wasn't even their starter until rookie Charles Spencer broke his leg)...

After 3 games, Carter has 6 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 quarterback hurries... doesn't look like he's gonna be the second coming of Charles Haley for the Skins, LOL...

3) Brandon Lloyd, 3 catches for 26 yards and 0 TDs in 3 games... how much did they give up to get him, again??

4) Chris Cooley, 7 catches for 38 yards and 0 TDs in 3 games... this was their second best receiving weapon last year...

The Skins put a serious hurtin' on the Toxins, and I know Skins fans are feeling this sense of relief at gettin' off the schneid, but they won't play any more teams as completely putrid as the Toxins the rest of the way (though the Titans might come close)... for sure, it won't be so easy next week...

They got a W they needed, but I still see serious problems with that team...

I think you're underestimating the lack of a pass rush by Washington.

They played three of the four worst teams at protecting the passer last season. The Texans were #1 last year with 68 sacks allowed, followed by Minnesota, the NYG and then Dallas. When a Dline can't even sniff Carr, Johnson and Bledsoe, that's not putrid, that's embarrassing.

Also did the play that the Texans ran to A. Johnson to set up their first TD look familiar? I know I've seen it somewhere. That's going to haunt that team all year.

Somehow the Texans defense managed to be slow, weak, and dumb all at the same time.

Slow because they couldn't swarm to the ball on those screens. It's not like the Commanders did many misdirections or anything, they had no need to.

Weak because they couldn't seem to shed a block all game. Mario getting owned by a TE. Dockery pancaking one guy then shoving another out of the way on the same play. The entire defensive line...

And dumb because they were consistently out of position like on Portis's shovel catch and his TD run at the end of the half. Plus they made no adjustments.

They need 2-3 years of drafts like ours of 2005 to get into contention.

You guys who think Carr is a player obviously haven't watcher many Texans games. The guy has tons of physical talent, but that's about it.

This is the worst NFL team I've seen in a long time. Hell, their first team in 2002 was better -- at least they competed.

Not that I care, as I hate the Texans.

I agree. Carr has looked bad and I think part of it is he has become shell shocked after being hit as much as he has. I think the best thing that could happen to Carr is to be released and get a fresh start else where. I doubt that will happen

He has one of the highest QB ratings in the league right now, but gets sacked repeatedly and fumbles repeatedly. He fumbles the snap from center at least once per week, a lot like Quincy Carter.

Sure, their o-line is pathetic, but you can't afford to fumble the snap from center every week and expect to win.

I think if he is surrounded by talent, he could be a pretty good QB, but that has been said about him for the past 4 years.

Here is the problem with the rating system. He is getting the numbers after the outcome is no longer in question. I do agree it is not all Carr and Houston has done little to help him out along the line but the rating system in this case is messed up

His stats have came from garbage time once the game's outcome has been decided. They've gotten their butt's kicked bad 3 weeks in a row.

They are calling Carr "Mr. 4th Quarter" here in Houston. :laugh1:

I watched alot of the Texans/Skins game and I have to concur that quite plainly this team is absolutely atrocious. Their defense was better under LeBeau, without Supergirl... I mean Mario. They can't cover, can't tackle, can't stop the run, can't stop the pass.

From what I saw the two best players on defense they have are DeMeco Ryans and our former guy, Thomas Johnson. Ryans is a talent with skill and speed and seems hungry. Johnson is a stout run stopper that gets pressure on the QB from time to time.

Dunta Robinson is ok but vastly overrated, and Andre Johnson is a good WR. After these four players and maybe Carr whom finally seems to get a little time to throw... this team is abysmal. Rock bottom terrible.

I think Elisha Manning has the best claim to that nickname, personally. :D

Some defensive stats from the Texans first three games:
  • They are allowing an avg of 483.7 yds per game, which is dead last in the league. The second worst defense (Green Bay) is allowing 388.3.
  • They are allowing an avg of 6.9 yds per play, a full yd more than the next worst teams (Ariz/Green Bay, 5.9 ypp).
  • opponents have converted 26 of 38 3rd downs (a mind-boggling 68.4% success rate). This in a league where teams generally convert 35-40%.
Yeah, Reggie Bush would have solved all of that.

These numbers aren't just bad, they're historically bad. The 2006 Texans are on pace to be the worst defensive unit in NFL history.

Too early to call him a bust, but they needed Bush, Bush was there yet they passed.

If they get another top three pick, they should think about trading it for a multitude of first day picks to improve the team everywhere. Outside of D. Robinson, I wouldn't take many players from that team.

I like Andre Johnson. He's a great talent, and about the only player on offense that's worth a damn.
