Did Terrell Owens stunt Romo's growth?

Nah, I don't buy it. Romo's growth was stunted because TO is just too annoying? Give me a break. If such is true, then I think the real problem would be Tony Romo. In which case we'd be in big trouble as a franchise.

If anything, TO spoiled the guy (as someone already suggested). Only a year ago, people had no problem calling TO the 2nd best in the game. And now, a season later he, the HOF player, has supposedly been holding Romo back? Maybe Romo forced to ball to TO because...oh...I don't know...perhaps because he is one of the best receivers (statistically) to ever play the game?

I mean goodness, Romo has been throwing to pro-bowl talent the second he took the starter reigns and when things go bad it is him we give the benefit of the doubt? Ugh. This franchise just keeps letting me down as of late.

TO certainly did not have a HOF season. He didn't even have a Pro Bowl season.

This tends to happen to 35 year olds in the NFL.

A lot of our 2007 Pro Bowlers didn't have Pro Bowl seasons, so I don't see why TO being 35 is automatically pointed to as the reason for his decline. This whole TEAM was a mess and the finger for that has to be pointed at the coaches (the same coaches gushing over TO's athletic ability last offseason). Romo basically came out and said our scheme was exposed. But we get rid of TO? WOW.

I was listening to the Irvin show this AM and this question came to me.

I have to say yes, primarily because of TO's malcontent attitude and need to have his ego stroked. If a player (especially a quarterback) has to go out of his way to ensure that another player is not feeling hurt or out of place then it is definitely stunting his own growth.

I think most of us can agree that this trade happened to benefit Romo. He's a young quarterback who has shown us flashes of greatness but when December rolls around he doesn't have the ability to finish. Maybe its the over-consuming annoyance that is TO.

Either way, I believe that this trade will allow Romo to grow and became the real quarterback he should have been last year.

Check out my article on this subject: http://mvn.com/thecowboyroundup/2009/03/terrell-owens-stunted-romos-growth.html

NOOOOOOO! Tony Romo stunts his own growth. Loose the loser attitude Tony please!:banghead:

Becuse numerous scouts and reports have said TO simply didn't come close to getting open or seperation as often as he used to. Because he is going to decline further next season - again, age beats everyone eventually - and when he does he is going to complain even louder that nobody is doing their job but him. It will be the same carp all over again.

This day was coming probably a year from now no matter what. We didn't trade for Roy and give him gazillion bucks to be a #2 behind a declining overloud #1.

Not everything is the coaches fault. Scheme or no players have to execute, and those same coaches that designed the 2007 HOF offense made this one. And Owens certainly is as guilty as anyone of not executing, no matter what he might tell you.

Bottom line Jerry invested in the future. Not throwing away a young coach for an old WR who would be gone soon anyway. Garrett might suck it up again next year and be gone too, but for once I think Jerry took the right approach on this one.

Romo must be a very weak minded QB, if a big baby like TO can get in his head enough to STUNT HIS GROWTH!

Doesnt Romo have like a 95 QB rating since being the starter?

some Romo fans are waiting to see the first 200 QB rating!

I think that Garrett propensity to go deep had more to do with Romos struggles than anything else. I think gradually over the past 2 years Romo has gone from a quick read/ quick strike guy to someone who is always looking deep.

Is it possible that Romo held onto the ball longer to try to get it to TO more - possibly, but if that is the case then routes should have been shortened to eliminate that.

Somebody said it earlier that it has had more to do with coaching than anything else and I believe that is true. BP had Romo getting the ball out by the count of 3!

I know the Eli argument is popular right now, but like the above poster mentioned, things got easier for Eli when Shockey and Tiki left.

As far as last year is concerned, not only did the Giants lose Burress, they also had a beat up Brandon Jacobs, and two lines that got a little nicked up. Burress was the bigger story so people ignored the other issues. But they weren't getting nearly as much pressure on QBs, and their OL wasn't quite as dominant quite as often either.

I just think of the Titans and Dolphins and Ravens though. Derrick Mason is a good player. Every other receiver on those teams is "just a guy". They aren't that special, and they didn't need to be. They just got open and caught the football.

Things sure got tougher for Eli with Plax out.

There are just as many reports on TO supposed decline as there are reports and comments regarding our heavily flawed scheme. Articles broke it down for us. Commentators told us things like "I just don't see these WRs being put in a position to succeed...". Opposing players even called us out and laughed in our face. Then it all had to lead up to our own QB saying that our scheme was exposed. IMO, our main problem couldn't be any clearer.

Whether our players don't execute or execute a bad scheme, the result is the same. A lack of production. We seem to be so quick to give Garrett "another chance" to prove himself, but TO, the guy who has already proven himself to be a dominant force in the league, is not given the same courtesy.

Of course a team's problems aren't all on the coaches. Ours however, mostly are, and it is a shame to see so many of our players being torn down in order to make excuses for this coaching staff. Now Barber (and his 3.7ypc) has supposedly proven that he isn't as good as we thought. Now, our O-line apparently sucks. Now, TO is not only not the 2nd best in the league, but also holds back our QB. Now, Tony Romo is not the answer. It goes on and on.

Goodness, they even had the audacity to say something like "We don't have any come from behind plays for Felix Jones". My goodness, enough of these guys.

I thought that's why we brought in QB coach Jason Garrett?

I don't completely disagree with you and I also believe Garrett had a crappy season. I think even his most ardent supporters here will give you that. I'm not really sure what he has ever done to get another chance. And to be honest I blame Wade more because even if Garrett was brilliant last year, the fundamentals on this team were so sloppy I'm not sure we would have done much better anyway.

I've said numerous times before TO was cut that I would rather fire the coaching and keep him, but if we keep these coaches then he has to go.

I think TO's distractions were real, not a figment of the Media's Nefarious Schemes. I think he was a strain on the coaching, who were already being undermined by their owner. I think he is a strain on Romo, because the pressure to throw the ball to Owens is not only coming from TO himself, but the owner and the fans and even other players who have bought into his song and dance as well. And I think TO makes things harder for Garrett, because he can't utilize the other weapons that he has as much.

PLus I think a poor technical receiver like TO is going to age very badly. When he goes, I think hes is going to go fast, because once his burst dimishes he doesn't have good route skills or hands to fall back on.

If he was 30, or if we hadn't dealt for Roy he would still be here, no question in my mind. But given all of the above Jerry made a decision to move on to the next era. He already has a ton invested in Garret, Romo and Williams succeeding for years to come, while again we were probably looking for one more year of TO at the most. And I think TO still being here makes it harder for those guys to succeed.

We are a worse football team talent wise for a year, but if Jerry is right (and that is a big if) we may be a better one for many years afterwards. That's the bottom line for me.

Still hope we get Shanny or Holmgren next year though.

It's funny how nobody worried about stunting Romo's "growth" by letting him throw to one of the top WRs in the league back in 2006 or 2007.

Fact is that since joining Dallas in 2006, Terrell Owens has 38 receiving TDs. Over that time that's more than Moss, Harrison, Wayne, Burress, Houshmandzadeh, Andre Johnson, Fitzgerald, Boldin, Ward (and every other WR).

Stunted Romo's growth? HA! That's ridiculous. If anything he's let Romo grow by leaps and bounds. It's time for Tony to put up or shut up, though I'm sure there will be plenty of folks making excuses for him though... it's those excuses that will stunt his growth.

I don't think Romo cared too much about his ego

I do think that since TO was "the guy", so to speak, Romo wanted to look for him as often as he could, but TO just isn't the same player anymore that can make teams pay

unless he's running around, uncontested off the line

what do you mean? TO has been here longer than Garrett, TO has been given multiple chances. His whining and constant crap after a game is overbearing on teammates and management. Garrett had a great season with 13-3, and yes he had a bad season the past year but does that mean we just shelf the guy for a receiver who is on the decline (he's 35 and his production has dropped off). Garrett could be a hidden gem if he retains his 13-3 type calling, Garrett doesn't have any attitude problems or doesn't go out at his players. TO does that and he must go. If you look at a team like Pittsburgh, theres a reason they are champs because they don't allow this kind of attitude. There's no I before team for them.

I agree with your whole post, except this part. I thought he was a great route runner, I may be wrong but I thought his physical prowess combined with his route running made him a great receiver.

I do see his burst diminishing and because of this eventual inability to get off the line he will have a tough time getting open

When I say "growth", I mean growth as a leader (which will allow you to grow as a player). Sure, Romo's stats may have been elevated because of TO's YAC, but it's not worth it when you have him yelling in your ear constantly.

Look at the Eagles and the 49ers - do you really think these franchises are that stupid to give up such a talented receiver if it wasn't for his horrible attitude? NO! Terrell Owens has a horrible attitude and is selfish - THAT'S what got him out of Dallas!

Owens gave Romo the potential to be a better leader. If he was infact yelling in his ear "constantly" Romo had the opportunity to step up and put his foot down as leader of the team.

Sadly never happened...Romo's lack of a pair isn't because of Owens.
