This may be very optimistic of me, but did the Cowboys FO know that the team was likely not going anywhere this season?

They made an attempt to get Sammy Watkins, but Sammy (and his agent) decided his stats would be much better in KC. Good call by Sammy.

The whole off-season you could tell they were likely going to cut Dez. He cost a lot and was no longer producing high enough level. And after his public tantrums there is zero chance they will bring him back.

Jason Written read the tea leaves and decided he did not want to be a part of the 2018 Dallas Cowboys more than he wanted to be a broadcaster. Perhaps he could also sense the direction of the team this season.

They did not spend much money in free agency. Yes, it could mean Stephen is cheap. But maybe he and others knew that this team was going to struggle a great deal to score points and hence win many games. Perhaps, Stephen knew that the team may likely have a poor record which will finally push out JG and crew. Perhaps there are many in the FO ready to push the reset button.

Not saying everything will turn out golden. Just saying this may not surprise the FO as much as people may think.

I don't see how they couldn't. We knew the offense was struggling in training camp.

My should have's List (from previous post)

should have made a legit play for E. Thomas (2 picks yesterday)
should have drafted the best WR on the board, look what he did yesterday (3 touchdown catches)
should have found a better backup QB
should made at least one splash in free agency
hired a legitimate QB coach
Found new OC

This is what the FO should be thinking.

That analysis defines a loser...as they have the talent to contend, yet don't. At some point, planning has to succeed on the carpet...period.

No. They actually believe in what they’re selling.

That Garrett is the best HC they can get.

That Dak was the better option in 2016.

That cutting their best receiver would improve the passing game.

That they’d be ok at TE after Witten left.

That the safety and DT positions are fine.

They’re clueless.

You may want to delete this thread if you have that option.

The FO enters every season with HOPE.

That's all they know how to do.

No.

They constantly overrate their roster and their ability to grab/evaluate talent.

Totally agree but to go along with what you said I believe they overrate their coaching staff in their ability to coach up average to below average talent as well.

They saw 1-2 coming about as much as the Patriots did if that adds some clarity for you.

Sometimes an army must retreat to gather a stronger force. Conceding or folding does not mean losing the war. Just a battle.

Saw this coming? You've never noticed Jerry's unbridled optimism and Stephen's incredible arrogance?

It's the opposite. They think they've put together a great team and expect to win practically every game. Probably still do, in fact.

What I mean is, do they care? Let's say for instance that they felt the team would go nowhere this year with the coach, QB, current roster.

And some felt that the only way to really reset the team was a very down year...

I thought the same thing. The FO does not believe in Dak but they have given him ample rope to hang himself. The OL was good you have Zeke the WR’s are serviceable.
Let’s all just be glad we found abot Dak before paying him.

They sell the team that way until there is no excuse. What they truly believe who knows. They are marketers. Marketers will sell you **** sandwiches till you stop buying.

Why do you have to ask the obvious question?

As long as the Joneses are raking in money of course they don't care

If Jerry was serious about winning Kellen Moore wouldnt be his QB coach, this is the Cowboys not the Desperados. I dont blame Kellen any more than anybody else in the current train wreck. However ole Jer spends way too much time tying to prop up losing coaches and systems than actually trying to win.
