PJTHEDOORS;5083107 said:Yes it comes down to the individual. Some want to be in the spotlight, dressed up, and be seen by many (family included) for that night. Others may be more private, and feel no need for it.
AbeBeta;5083118 said:To suggest someone graduating from college "wants to be in the spotlight" makes them seem self centered. Particularly when you are one of several hundreds (or often thousands) earning a degree that day. That is hardly "spotlight."
PJTHEDOORS;5083122 said:By that I mean with a large crowd standing in front of hundreds or thousands of people (audience). Is that hard to understand? I think you are overreacting. And yes, when they call your name, and you walk alone up to the podium to pick up your diploma, you are in the spotlight.
Some people don't want that extra attention. Hey, you like it, bravo. Wonderful. But not everyone is you.
THIS..........AbeBeta;5083132 said:Yes. This is really about getting "extra attention."
The whole idea that this is about whether you dig the attention or not totally ignores that these ceremonies involve the families, friends, and other who supported the graduate at various stages of their lives.
Honestly, what is selfish and attention grabbing is denying your family the experience because of a graduate's failure to understand that it is just about them.

What is so appealing about wearing a goofy gown and cap and celebrating being a brick in the wall?
Sounds like you're the one needing to get some perspective.BigStar;5083182 said:I agree with you Rash, I received my bachelor's degree in the mail and went to work the next day. Grow up...

Also, do you think you and BW Webb have the same life circumstances?
For all we know he may be the first in his family to graduate. I don't know one way or theother.
And another also; William & Mary is no piss-ant school academically. That degree holds a good bit of honor....especially to some.
It's the second oldest school in the USA behind Harvard and is rated one of the "Most Selective" by US News.
For National Research Universities (the largest class), it ranked 33rd.
That would be ahead of all schools in the Big 12 for example and all but one in the SEC.
His family should be proud.

TheRomoSexual;5082865 said:Are you kidding me? This is absurd. Not to mention that graduation is often more for the family of the graduate than the graduate himself.
I couldn't imagine the family disaster that would have occurred if I refused to walk.
