Yes it comes down to the individual. Some want to be in the spotlight, dressed up, and be seen by many (family included) for that night. Others may be more private, and feel no need for it.

To suggest someone graduating from college "wants to be in the spotlight" makes them seem self centered. Particularly when you are one of several hundreds (or often thousands) earning a degree that day. That is hardly "spotlight."

By that I mean with a large crowd standing in front of hundreds or thousands of people (audience). Is that hard to understand? I think you are overreacting. And yes, when they call your name, and you walk alone up to the podium to pick up your diploma, you are in the spotlight.

Some people don't want that extra attention. Hey, you like it, bravo. Wonderful. But not everyone is you.

Yes. This is really about getting "extra attention."

The whole idea that this is about whether you dig the attention or not totally ignores that these ceremonies involve the families, friends, and other who supported the graduate at various stages of their lives.

Honestly, what is selfish and attention grabbing is denying your family the experience because of a graduate's failure to understand that it is just about them.

Rookie mini-camp is about jump-starting the young guys, but also very much about the coaches taking their measure. I'd guess the Cowboys' coaches probably have all that they need to know about BW. Reports have been pretty good. The young man showing some respect and responsibility to his family in this matter will probably not pass unnoticed by the coaches.

I'll hoist a cup of coffee in his honor.

And at least his graduating now means that he won't miss any of the other mini-camps due to NFL graduation rules.

Given the sacrifices the many parents make to get their kids through college yes it is a big deal for them.

This is not seeking the limelight.

Cut him.

Have Garrett standing behind the person that gives him his diploma and hand him his pink slip immediately after getting the diploma.

pffft I'd skip graduation if I were in his shoes.

What is so appealing about wearing a goofy gown and cap and celebrating being a brick in the wall?

I agree with you Rash, I received my bachelor's degree in the mail and went to work the next day. Grow up...joking(to each his own)

But seriously, that is how I actually received my diploma and continued on working (was 23). All that other feel good celebration fluff wasn't necesarry for me or my family.

Sounds like you're the one needing to get some perspective.

Also, do you think you and BW Webb have the same life circumstances?
For all we know he may be the first in his family to graduate. I don't know one way or theother.

And another also; William & Mary is no piss-ant school academically. That degree holds a good bit of honor....especially to some.

It's the second oldest school in the USA behind Harvard and is rated one of the "Most Selective" by US News.
For National Research Universities (the largest class), it ranked 33rd.
That would be ahead of all schools in the Big 12 for example and all but one in the SEC.
His family should be proud.

Sweet:laugh2:

So you graduated from W&M and did not walk?

BTW, I didn't walk either for my undergrad, but did for grad school.
But my parents had 6 kids and we all went to college and they knew I had more school to go at some point.

My guess is it was different for Webb and his family. Not absolutely sure though.

Are you kidding me? This is absurd. Not to mention that graduation is often more for the family of the graduate than the graduate himself.

I couldn't imagine the family disaster that would have occurred if I refused to walk.

You and me both!!:laugh2:
