Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current radio color commentator Babe Laufenberg spoke with SportsDayDFW.com Thursday about the Cowboys’ minicamp:

On how Tony Romo looked at minicamp:

“I’ve never seen him throw the ball better. He was just so sharp and crisp, and his ball never had a wobble on it. The ball just came out of his hand like it was shot from a jugs machine. I talked to Drew Brees a couple of years ago and was talking to him about the grip on the football and the various aspects of throwing, and he said he throws a ‘tight wobble.’ At every other position as you get older, and your physical skills diminish, you’re not as good a player. At the quarterback position, you can play your best football when physically you may not be what you once were. A great example of that is John Elway won his two Super Bowls at the age of 37 and 38. Imagine how good Romo will look with Dez Bryant on the field.”

On what he makes of Dez Bryant’s appearance at minicamp Thursday:

“I know everyone is going to start reading the tea leaves on his appearance: ‘Dez is caving in. Jerry has softened once he saw Dez’s lovely face.’ But I think all it really was was Dez Bryant showing up on the last day of practice on the day when the Cowboys held their family day. To think they’re any closer or further away from a deal because Dez showed up today would be taking a tremendous leap of faith.”

On what happens now between minicamp, training camp:

“This is the period of time that the NFL fears most. This is not so lovingly referred to as “arrest season.” If you believe in the adage that the devil’s work is done by idle hands, they have five weeks for their hands to be idle. Mike Vick was not fighting dogs on his one off day during the regular season. It’s this time of year when players go home and hang around old friends that don’t have to lose what the player has to lose. So keep your fingers crossed until July 28th.”

On what kind of things he got into between minicamp and training camp:

“(Laughs) Can I plead the fifth?

What will the expectations be like when Cowboys report on July 28th?

“There’s always pressure for every NFL team and every NFL player. This year will be different for the Cowboys because when they reported to Oxnard last season, they were viewed as a four-to-six-win team, and if they got to eight wins, Jason Garrett would be voted Coach of the Year. Fast forward to today, and it’s a 12-4 team that was one disputed incompletion in Green Bay away from being in the NFC Championship Game and facing a Seattle team they had previously beaten in Seattle. So while the star is on their helmet, the bull’s-eye is now on their back.”

So throwing in a no pads minicamp, he hasn't done better in other camps? I'm guessing because he can't be touched by the defense, he is way more comfortable.

I think what he is trying to say is that he's moving around better and able to do a little more than he has in recent years since his back might be healing up.

In recent years, he's been very limited.

Your right no pad practice is useless. Should cancel them all.

Not useless but less useful in evaluation and getting the players ready to play.

Less padded practices have hurt the game overall. The quality has gone down since the last CBA and the limited physical contact has diluted the product.

I was being sarcastic. I do agree that less padded practice has led to a lot more soft tissue injuries.

All this tells me is:

1. Romo is fat and played golf all off season (when will this guy grow up?)

2. Babe hates Dez (how can he not see that Dez being on the sidelines, not practicing with the team, not signing the franchise tag clearly means "Dez loves football"?)

3. Babe hates the cowboys (mentally adds Babe to long list of cowboy haters)

The Elway was better later, please, he finally had some help and won some bowls. Same as Tony, he has a unstoppable OL now, he is capable of winning a Super Bowl.

I'd like to see the numbers but I'd be very surprised if there were more overall injuries without pads.

So the last 2 years prior to TC and during TC Babe basically says Romo was done, finished. Now he says he's never seen him throw better....and brings up the success of Elway as he got older as a possible comparison....
A media brain fart?....or just a mediot reporting?....LOL...

I usually like Babe's reporting and analysis, so not knocking him, just saying his past 2 years thoughts and now this years.....on Romo....

It's just what curmudgeonly folks say these days to seem well informed and holier than tho. "Remember the good old days when men were men!?"

Its silly talk.

Babe is not the only in-the-know "mediot" that thought Tony was done. Through the years, Babe has been a huge supporter of Romo but even he could not help adding to the negative speculation concerning Tony's back. He forgot one thing, though: Tony may be fat and lazy but he has moxie.
