DV aside, there still isn't a big enough need for this to be a real bargaining chip.

Most of the guys in the league don't have any need at all for reduced punishments.
That's the main reason why the union doesn't push these issues when negotiating. They are not going to make real sacrifices for something that won't benefit any more than 1% of the membership.

It's like the franchise tag. The union would have to give up something very important to get rid of the franchise tag. But the franchise tag only impacts about 1% of players, so those 1% get very little sympathy from the rank and file.

Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Greg Hardy is pictured working out during the Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp held at Valley Ranch on Friday, May 8, 2015. (Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News)

Former Cowboys quarterback Babe Laufenberg answered questions in a chat Wednesday. Here are some highlights.

Question: Any idea on when Greg Hardy decision will be made?

Babe Laufenberg: It has been about 40 days, and no idea why it is taken so long. But my take on what will happen. NFL will not reduce the suspension…looked soft on Ray Rice decision (which they were) and we know how that backlash got ‘em. However, by the letter of the law of the CBA at that time, the domestic violence punishment was two games. They suspended him 10 games by putting it under the heading of “conduct detrimental to the game” (not to mention the “conduct detrimental” to the health of the woman involved). I believe if the case goes to court, the league will fight as hard as they can, even if they believe it is unwinnable. They cannot appear weak on domestic violence issues, so even if it costs a ton of money, they will go all in. And a ton of money is a relative term when you are talking NFL deep pockets.

Question: Who is the unknown guy we should look forward to seeing in camp?

Babe Laufenberg: I think there are two. one is George Farmer, the receiver out of USC. The other, is quarterback Dustin Vaughn. Farmer was a kid with a lot of talent who went undrafted, and it is hard to hide a guy who comes out of USC. The other guy, would be Vaughn. Sometimes it is hard to say exactly why you like a QB. There are so many intangible that go into playing. Why there are so many misses, and why the Super Bowl last year featured a 6th and 3rd round pick at QB. But he has a little something to him. But he still has a long, long way to go. But he has a chance. I hope they let him compete for the backup job, but we will see.

Question: With McClain suspended for 4 games, Do they keep Lee at the Will and start Brinkley/Hitchens at MLB or is there potential we see Lee slide back into that role?

Babe Laufenberg: I think the temptation would be to move Lee into the middle….I would be tempted…but the best thing and the way I believe they will go is to just leave him on the weakside. Save a little wear and tear of taking on big bodies on the inside, and just give a little continuity to the defense. I hope he can stay healthy…doesn’t everyone…and I sure am looking forward to watching him play again.

With all due respect, Babe was far from the only person who held the opinion that the suspension would be upheld at 10 games. There were many, including a bunch of "experts" on this ite who referred to Harold Henderson as "Goodell's lap dog".

I did not espouse this position and Babe should refrain as stated.

Babe was right about Romo way back when nobody thought twice about the undrafted free agent.

And he's brilliant on broadcasts.

But he needs to stick with the football stuff and leave the doctoring and lawyering to others.

Some of the local sports talk radio guys once did a review of the things that Babe said during a broadcast. While he occasionally had good points, they showed that he said many things that made no sense at all.
