A safety and quarterback worth looking at

When free agency starts on Friday a priority of the Cowboys will be finding a backup quarterback and maybe a safety.

Nothing personal against Brad Johnson, but if you cut him it saves you about $2 million plus you can find a better product. Also, nothing against Brooks Bollinger, but he doesn't have the skills.

Rex Grossman and Chris Simms are two free agents worth looking at during the free agency period.

Also, Dan Orlovsky is an interesting name. The Lions offered him a deal he didn't like, so he's going to test the market. The Lions have plenty of cap room so expect them to go after some quality players, especially at quarterback, though I suspect Daunte Culpepper will return to Motown.

At safety here's a name you might look at Reed Doughty of the Commanders. He was banged up plenty last season. But he's a physical player who might surprise you.

Now, of course the Cowboys have to cut Roy Williams to make this happen.

Jerry Jones said the team won't be players in free agency, despite what Ray Lewis might want. That might be the first good thing Jones has said this off-season. Building through the draft, especially at the skill positions, is important.

Yet, finding a veteran quarterback and a stop gap at safety is key.

I'd look at JP Losman at backup QB before those guys.

I think his skill-set and demeanor are closer to Romo's.

But that's me.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Reed Doughty? You gotta be kidding me.

I sometimes question the intellect of some of these beat writers. Do they even watch the games?

I am guessing Calvin missed Terrell Owens abusing Doughty in 2007.

If Dallas were to sign Orlovsky, they really need to reinstate Nors for a while.

Sean Jones, Josh Bullocks, maybe James Butler

I know Jones is probably going to be too expensive.

Simms seems like a likely choice as backup, though I wouldnt mind them looking at Boller either. He actually has more tds than ints for his career, and seemed to be improving a little in 2007. Grossman wouldnt be my ideal choice because he is so mistake prone, but with our skills guys and probable focus on the run game maybe he would be ok as a stop gap, and at the least he does have a significantly stronger arm than either Johnson or Bollinger.

Nors is banned? I didn't know that I thought he just disappeared because he got owned around here so much.

Funny you should mention Bullocks cause I'm actually a fan of him. Of course I'll fully admit that's the Cornhusker fan in me talking cause he might not be worth even a look but I loved watching him play when he was at Nebraska.

Rex wouldn't be a bad backup if you get the Rex whose actually on when he gets into a game. If you get the Rex who isn't on though...yikes.

Give me Sean Jones over Reed Doughty.

I have seen Doughty play enough to know we can find better via the draft.

You can probably find better walking through the local mall.

I would hope a #1 WR would abuse a safety.

Reed Doughty?

Yikes. I'd rather give Roy a raise and line him up in that one safety defense that high school freshman teams run.

Worst... suggestion...ever.

What cut Roy? Why?

Don't Jerry and Wade know he's the only safety with 2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 100 tackles, 4 horsecollars, 2 french fries, and a safety in the last 3 years?
