The Cowboys have looked into the possibility of trading linebacker Bobby Carpenter, according to sources, but there is some reluctance in moving the former first-round pick with Kevin Burnett's departure.
Burnett signed a two-year deal with San Diego earlier this month, leaving Carpenter as the top backup on the roster currently and a leading candidate to take over Burnett's role in the substitute defensive packages.

The 18th overall pick in 2006, Carpenter has been credited with just seven tackles in the last two seasons, spending most of his time at special teams, where he has made 30 tackles in 2007-08.
Carpenter is scheduled to earn an $885,000 base salary this year and he has yet to cash in on a $1.895 million incentive based on playing time, which could make a trade more difficult if he did not re-work his contract.

But the Cowboys have an obvious need at linebacker and while the coaches want him to be more physical, he has shown in preseason work he can cover tight ends and running backs. He also has experience rushing the passer.
In addition to Carpenter at inside linebacker, the Cowboys have starters Bradie James and free-agent addition Keith Brooking and special teamer Steve Octavien.

Jerry Jones needs a bag of Cheetos?

Really, what could Jerry get for Carpenter?

Fixed that for ya. ;)

were not gonna get any takers. only possibility is probably miami and it will be for a very low pick.

were better off just keeping him and actually giving him a chance to play and stay at one position. that way we can truly know if he can play. if not well just cut our losses after this season.

it makes no sense to trade him for a low end pick to some else. we would really look stupid if we did so after never giving him any real chance to play and then end up watching him be productive somewhere else. for what a 6th rounder? ill rather take my chances with him on the roster

Parcells wanted him last year, so they could possibly get a mid round pick 4th-5th.

all you can ever get for an unproven player is another team's unproven plyer, or a vetera past his prime (and we don't need either). It's that, or a late round draft pick (and I don't see anyone giving that up for Carpeneter). At this rate, if we could get a Ken doll for him it would be an upgrade.

He's cheap so they should keep him and let him be the Nickel LB for 2009.

For Sale: soft, 4-3 linebacker. Hardly used. Not a big fan of contact. Asking for 7th round pick or best offer.

Those of you choosing to go the "he's not worth a bag of chips" route would likely be the same ones *****ing and moaning if our special teams sucks next year.

Fact is...Bobby is too soft on defense, but he's a decent, if not good special teamer. He's cheap. He's active on special teams....and he certainly would NOT be upgraded by a bag of chips...and likely not by a 7th rounder.

Let him play his contract out on special teams...and then let him find the door next year.

i am against this move as long as as backup situation at LB looks dire.if they draft a solid LB prospect then they can trade him.

What's it going to be then, eh?

The best route at this point is to showcase him in the preseason and trade him for another failed bust. I doubt we would get much in terms of a draft choice for him right now.

If Bobby Carpenter is the glue holding our special teams together, we are in some pretty bad shape.

And?

He's cheap.

For a special teamer, he's expensive.

That's ridiculous. Special teams players can and do come from late round draft choices. He's a rarity because he can't cut it playing regular defense. Octavien was an undrafted free agent and he contributed more in terms of big plays in the brief time he played last season.

The only way we get anything in a trade for him, and I'd be surprised if we got even a 6th, is if BP still wanted him and we made a deal with Miami to send him there.

I can't see them giving us a 4th or 5th rounder for him. I'd be pretty surprised if we got anything that high for him.

The only way I could see us trading him is if we do it for a draft pick to take Derry Beckwith who the scouts are very high on.

Listen to the latest lunchbreak show with Darren Woodson at DC.com... He laughs at the idea that Carpenter can do the job.

They've probably floated his name out to the league, and nobody wants him.

I certainly didn't refer to him as the "glue"....but if you care to look at the facts, then you'll notice he's been one of our most productive special teamers over the last three years. As much *****ing and moaning as I've seen about our special teams would leave me to believe that we should be looking to strengthen that third...not weaken it.

Do you need help with something? Is this too hard for you?

For a special teamer, he's expensive.

He's also depth at a position where we can ill afford to lose talent. His salary is on the high side considering his production, yes, but it's still likely cheaper than any free agent that we could bring in to replace him. It's not like he's responsible for us not being able to sign Canty, or extend Ware. He's still cheap in the grand scheme of things.

It's NOT ridiculous. I never said it couldn't be done. I never even suggested it. Carpenter is already an assured contributor to special teams. A 7th rounder isn't even assured to make the roster. That's a fairly large gamble to take with a thin ILB position.

Fact is, it's a stupid move to trade Carpenter for a 6th or 7th...or for a bag of chips. Stupid.
