Bobby Carpenter on block?

The Cowboys have looked into the possibility of trading linebacker Bobby Carpenter, according to sources, but there is some reluctance in moving the former first-round pick with Kevin Burnett's departure.
Burnett signed a two-year deal with San Diego earlier this month, leaving Carpenter as the top backup on the roster currently and a leading candidate to take over Burnett's role in the substitute defensive packages.

The 18th overall pick in 2006, Carpenter has been credited with just seven tackles in the last two seasons, spending most of his time at special teams, where he has made 30 tackles in 2007-08.
Carpenter is scheduled to earn an $885,000 base salary this year and he has yet to cash in on a $1.895 million incentive based on playing time, which could make a trade more difficult if he did not re-work his contract.

But the Cowboys have an obvious need at linebacker and while the coaches want him to be more physical, he has shown in preseason work he can cover tight ends and running backs. He also has experience rushing the passer.
In addition to Carpenter at inside linebacker, the Cowboys have starters Bradie James and free-agent addition Keith Brooking and special teamer Steve Octavien.
But... but... who will keep the bench warm for the *REAL* football players next season? Maybe it means that Stanback can finally make the 53-man roster and take over for Barbie "Waste of a Pick" Carpenter.

Man just cut him and move on!

As good as that sounds in theory we literally have no linebacker depth.

Barbie is a near zero but that is better than zero. He'll be moved one way or the other soon enough but I'd say nothing happens before the draft.

If we draft a LB in round 3 or 4, I could see Carpenter being offered for a late 4th to mid 5th round pick.

I think Dallas will be stuck with "Barbie" for another year (unless a miracle happens). They'll address that problem in the draft.

BTW, LOL at the Linus pic.

Those of you choosing to go the "he's not worth a bag of chips" route would likely be the same ones *****ing and moaning if our special teams sucks next year.

Fact is...Bobby is too soft on defense, but he's a decent, if not good special teamer. He's cheap. He's active on special teams....and he certainly would NOT be upgraded by a bag of chips...and likely not by a 7th rounder.

Let him play his contract out on special teams...and then let him find the door next year.

He really does seem to play well on special teams. I agree with you there.

I don't see him being traded anywhere. Besides the talent there's the problem of renegotiating his contract. Why would he do that? He's going to make more money here than anywhere else. Since it's highly unlikely he's wanted by anyone then they either keep him or not. If he can't play well enough then cut him. They can replace him with another JAG.

all you can ever get for an unproven player is another team's unproven plyer, or a vetera past his prime (and we don't need either). It's that, or a late round draft pick (and I don't see anyone giving that up for Carpeneter). At this rate, if we could get a Ken doll for him it would be an upgrade.
Actually, Ken is not an upgrade over Barbie. Now if you throw in a Skipper doll....:)

We should get rid of him immediately, whether through a trade or cutting him!

It's pretty obvious he was the team cancer and team rat, who giving Ed Werder and ESPN all the info they need to blow the cowboys season.

Who do you replace him with?

Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't.

uh a 4th, 5th, or 6th rounder, get a LB who's hungry for a contract. It's not like we are trying to replace a back-up, were trying to replace a back-up of a back-up, we do have 12 draft picks, I'm pretty sure we can find a good LB late in the draft for special teams!

He is such a bust it doesn't even make sense to trade him. We'd get nothing in return. A #1 pick for nothing in return!

We're stuck with him until he can't even fill the slightest of roles and it starts costing more to suit him up for games then he's even worth. After that, probably forced into a situation of having him park cars at Valley Ranch just to recoup some of our loses and forgo the tedious $35 fee of a background check on a new employee.

Worth a bag of chips? He isn't even worth a single chip, whether it gets your fingers orange afterwards or not.

I don't want to seem confrontational here, but what exactly do you base your grading of his special teams abilities?

For one, the special teams stunk horribly last season. It may just have been the worst special teams for a single season the team has ever had.

And two, I saw Carp as a huge part of the problem on returns by his taking terrible angles, and missing tackles.

I don't disagree with anything you've pointed out here.

Special teams was horrid last season. Not the worst Cowboys unit I've seen in the last ten years, but terrible nonetheless.

Carp is better on coverage than he is anything else. He does miss some tackles here and there, but so does everyone on special teams. His angles could be improved, but then it's much harder to gauge angles on coverage than it is on any other unit. No excuses, just facts.

He has, despite all of his shortcomings, managed to outperform most of the other special teamers we have over the last three years. Where's the outcry for their departure for a "bag
