DMN Blog: Can any safety stop Martellus Bennett in the open field?

Ed Reed would take Martellus Bennett out of the game. Since we're looking for a safety to do so. Martellus wouldn't get the ball in his hands in the open field if Reed is out there.

I said earlier in the offseason that Marty B's ability to exploit the middle of the field in the 2 TE set is the key to this year's offense. Of course, to utilize the 2 TE set you have to avoid penalties, drops and zero-negative running plays that plague this team and habitually keep them out of managable down and distance situations. But that should be a focal point of improvement on this team with or without Marty B... This team has relied for far too long on Romo's ability to bail them out of long down and distance situations at ridiculously high success rates.

He will be our number 3 receiver behind AUSTIN and Witten.

I expect him to be in on more plays than Crayton, Hurd, or Austin.
Fixed it for you.

Just a quick question: IF the SS is covering Marty B., who is covering Witten? A LB? A nickel back? Two TE set will require a nickel package? That is 6 men up front? Who is going to stop Barber? Who will be on the edge to stop Felix once Witten and Bennet run off the nickel and safety?

Imagine Bigg pulling on a 6 man front!
NO way in hell you pull out a Nickel on a 2 TE set unless it's 3rd and long.

If they try this stunt, Felix may go for 300yds rushing.

No you did not.

Anyone who thinks Austin will be a bigger factor than Roy is completely delusional.

It's amazing what 20 catches and a lot of interwebs publicity will do for a guy's confidence.

That stat is amazing in itself.

The Kid had 20 rec and 4td's as a rookie playing behind 2 of the best receivers in the league.

I think he comes across the middle and has throat punches lined up for both Polomolu and Ed Reed too!! GET EM MARTY B!

Your prediction hinges solely on whether Roy Williams will miss a significant number of games this season.

why did we draft this guy?

Maybe Cooley could take some snaps as safety when we play em' week 11.

I think he definitely adds a big play element to the offense. Hopefully Garrett figures out a way to maximize his talents.

One of the more interesting of the many wrinkles in the Cowboys two-tight end package is motioning Martellus Bennett from the backfield to out wide to create a one-on-one situation against the strong safety.

"I love it," Marty B said with a big smile.

We saw that in the morning practice. Bennett caught a short out in front of Gerald Sensabaugh and turned upfield. Sensabaugh was in position to get a clean shot on Bennett at that moment, which led me to wonder if the 204-pound safety could take down the 265-pound tight end without any helmet.

"No," Bennett said.

OK, can any safety?

"I don't want to say any ...," Bennett said before scrapping the false humility. "Nah, they can't. I'm kind of confident right now. I'm in a zone."

Bennett has reason to believe in his ability to do damage after the catch. The ex-Texas A&M basketball player averaged 7.15 yards after the catch last season, according to Stats, Inc. San Francisco's Vernon Davis, another freakish physical specimen, was the only tight end with at least 20 reception to average more yards after catch.

this is what BP had in mind when they drafted what's his name. but bennet's blocking ability and his size and agility is either a mismatch for a LB or Saftey and Romo can just call the play to motion him wide or keep him at the line for the running play.
